Box Score Columbus, Ohio (Oct. 19, 2005) ???C Oakland freshman
Wade Allan (Shelby Township, Mich.) notched a goal and an assist to help the Golden Grizzlies??? cause Wednesday night, but the Black and Gold came up short versus Ohio State as the Buckeyes managed a 3-2 win. Sophomore
Nick Nelson (Vicksburg, Mich.) posted OU???s first goal of the night and led the squad with two shots in the match. OSU took an early 1-0 lead when Geoff Marsh made the pass to Danny Irizarry who chipped the ball just over OU keeper
Jeff Wiese???s (Omaha, Neb.) reach. Just 39 seconds later, at 8:17, Oakland answered when Allan connected with Nelson on the counter attack and Nelson put the ball in from five yards out. Both defenses took over for the remainder of the period and the teams entered halftime knotted at a goal apiece. It wasn???t until over 15 minutes into second half action that Ohio State regained the lead. Irizarry got the ball to Xavier Balc who bicycle-kicked the ball into the net from eight yards away. The Buckeyes then took a two-goal lead at the 72:31 mark when Kevin Nugent drilled a left-footed shot into the net to make the score 3-1. With time winding down, Oakland turned up the pressure and squeezed OSU???s lead to a goal when Allan sent one through the frame off a deflection at 87:44. Unfortunately for the Golden Grizzlies, there was not enough time left to catch up to the Buckeyes and OSU was able to hang on for the victory. Wiese scooped up eight saves in the effort after a full 90 minutes in goal, while OSU keeper Ray Burse made one grab. In addition to Allan and Nelson???s goals, freshman
Ian Daniel (Troy, Mich.) had the remaining shot on goal for Oakland. Ohio State is just the second regionally ranked team Oakland has fallen to this year since an early season loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Since that 1-0 loss on Sept. 9, the Grizzlies have defeated four strong regional teams, including Michigan (2-1), Detroit (2-1), Michigan State (1-0) and Cincinnati (2-1), which was ranked #18 in the country at the time the two teams squared off. OU also held Akron, the NCAA???s top scoring team, to just one goal in Rochester on Sept. 25. The Golden Grizzlies return home to host Oral Roberts this Saturday, October 22, with game time starting at 1 p.m.
