Oakland Men??' Soccer Downs Western Illinois in Mid-Con Opener

Box Score Macomb, Ill. (Oct. 1, 2005) ???C Oakland University???s men???s soccer team used three second half goals Saturday afternoon to defeat Western Illinois 3-1 in the Golden Grizzlies??? Mid-Continent Conference opener. OU newcomer Doron Drai (Natanya, Israel) assisted on the tying goal and notched his first goal of the season in the 88th minute to secure the win for Oakland. ???It was a tale of two halves,??? assistant coach Eric Pogue noted. ???We had a very lethargic first half, but came out much more aggressive in the second. We were able to put them under a lot more pressure and made some switches in a few positions, which helped. To be successful the rest of the season though, we???re going to have to do a better job of putting two good halves together.??? Western Illinois (2-7, 1-1 Mid-Con) took the first lead of the contest on a goal by Nowaf Jaman at 30:11. The Leathernecks took that 1-0 edge into the break, but Oakland (3-5, 1-0 Mid-Con) didn???t waste any time evening the score to start the second stanza. Just 46 seconds in, Jim Denk (Park Ridge, Ill.) took a pass from Drai and drilled it past Western goalkeeper Chris Frenz. Oakland recorded its second goal of the day at the 84:48 mark when Brandon Felker (Waterford, Mich.) dribbled up field and beat Frenz one-on-one to give the Golden Grizzlies a 2-1 advantage. Drai added an insurance goal for the Black and Gold at 87:10 when he ripped one past Frenz from 20 yards out. In addition to Oakland???s three goals, Wade Allan (Shelby Township, Mich.) had the team???s remaining three shots on goal in the match. OU net minder Jeff Wiese (Omaha, Neb.) added two more saves to his season total, while Frenz had three for the Leathernecks. Oakland heads just up the road next for a mid-week match-up with the Spartans of Michigan State Wednesday, Oct. 5. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in East Lansing.
