Oakland Soccer Coaches Past and Present Gather for Luncheon

Rochester, Mich.???C Former Oakland men???s soccer coaches met with present coach Gary Parsons for a luncheon at Macaroni Grill yesterday to celebrate his 300th win last weekend over No. 22 (NSCAA) Portland in the Portland Nike Tournament. The group gathered to share memories from the past and discuss the progress that has been made as the program enters its 30th season of existence as a varsity sport. Joining Parsons were coaches Scottie Crawford, John Motzer, Wayne Pirmann, and Klaas de Boer. Crawford coached the first soccer team at Oakland, which began as an intramural squad, and reflected on how he got the job. ??????I was the first coach here at Oakland, athletic director Hollie Lepley found out I had soccer experience and asked me to coach. He asked what it would cost to start a program and I said the cost of a ball. It was just an intramural team back then and has really developed into a solid program. Soccer is a wonderful sport that can be enjoyed by kids of all ages.??? Motzer coached from ???73-???77 and compiled a 48-16-6 record. ???Oakland has developed into one of the premier teams in not only the area, but the country,??? said Motzer. He led the team to its first NCAA appearance in 1976. ???I have lived in Oakland County since the 70???s, and even though I only coached for two years it is very nice to be a part of such a strong program that has come a long way. Oakland has become a nationwide recognized entity, not only in athletics but academically as well,??? commented Pirmann. ???Gary has come in and done a superb job.??? He compiled a 17-14-3 record in his two seasons. de Boer coached the team for one season in 1980 with an overall record of 14-4-2, the programs first 14 win season. ???I remember when I coached in 1980, reflected Boer, the budget was so tight we couldn???t even make long distance phone calls. The program has certainly come a long way and I am proud to have been a part of it.??? Oakland will look to build upon its success when it faces Marquette in the home opener on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
