UMKC Spoils Oakland??' Chance to Repeat as Conference Tournament Champions

Box Score Rochester, Mich. (Nov. 16, 2003)???C Oakland???s bid to capture its second consecutive Mid-Con Tournament title fell short as they lost to UMKC 1-0 Sunday afternoon in men???s soccer action. The Golden Grizzlies created plenty of chances after falling behind early, but despite outshooting the Kangaroos 24-4, were unable to convert. Drew Perkins came through for UMKC with his sixth goal of the season just eight minutes into the game. After receiving a pass from Ryan Barber on the counterattack, Dan Hilson raced down the right side of the field and sent a cross in front of the net. Perkins ran on to the ball with a defender trailing and tucked the ball into the far post, just out of reach of goalkeeper Jeff Wiese (Omaha, Neb.). The goal, just the third Oakland has surrendered in nine games, proved to be a wake-up call as the Golden Grizzlies went on the offensive. UMKC goalkeeper Todd Dohlman survived a flurry of shots that made the first half seem endless for the sophomore. After Dohlman saved a shot by Shahar Ktovim (Holon, Israel) in the 20th minute he came back to deny Anders Vollen (Oslo, Norway) four minutes later. Vollen released a cannon shot from the top-left corner of the penalty box that Dohlman tipped straight up into the air. The UMKC goalkeeper then got up one more time to tip the ball over the crossbar as a crowd of Oakland players waited for its descent. Oakland continued the pressure into the second half, holding a 9-2 advantage in shots. Their best chance to tie the game came in the 78th minute off a cross from junior Bret McNabb (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) on the left side. McNabb crossed the ball into the middle to Ryan Rzepka (Novi, Mich.) who headed it over to Brandon Felker (Waterford, Mich.). With the right side of the goal open, Felker sent his shot from five yards out over the crossbar, leaving him wishing he had that one back. Wiese, who had two saves in the match, prevented UMKC from adding an insurance goal later in the match as he turned away a seven-yard shot taken by Ryan Kaufman from the left side. Oakland put together one last run with under a minute to play, but the ball was misplayed out of bounds, giving UMKC the ball and the win.
