Perry Named Mid-Con Defensive Player of the Year

Elmhurst, Ill. (Nov. 14, 2003)???C Senior Jason Perry (Southfield, Mich.) capped off a brilliant college career at Oakland by being named the Mid-Con Defensive Player of the Year. Perry led a team that had seven representatives on the all-conference squad, including a league-high six on the first team. The defensive co-captain repeated as a first-team all-league honoree after recording five assists, and is the league???s first-ever Mid-Con Men???s Soccer Defensive Player of the Year. He anchored a Golden Grizzlies defense that ranks 21st in the nation with a 0.74 goals against average, allowing just 15 goals in 19 matches while posting six shutouts during the regular season. In conference play, Oakland allowed just three goals in six matches en route to a tie for the regular-season title, its fourth in a row. Perry was joined on the first team by forward Philip Braathen (Oslo, Norway), midfielders Doug Rice (Brighton, Mich.) and Anders Vollen (Oslo, Norway), defender Ryan Rzepka (Novi, Mich.), and goalkeeper Jeff Wiese (Omaha, Neb.), who is challenging the league???s single-season record for goals against average. Forward Chris Edwards (Glasgow, Scotland) was selected to the all-conference second-team for the second consecutive year. Braathen finished the regular season first on the team and fourth in the conference with 21 points. He also finished fourth in the conference with eight goals, including three game-winners. Rice has netted one goal and recorded two assists during the regular season, while Vollen registered two goals and three assists on the year. Rzepka matched Perry on defense with five assists, including a two-assist performance against Valparaiso. Wiese is currently ranked 21st in the nation and first in the conference with a 0.71 goals against average. He is also second in the conference in shutouts and fifth in saves. Edwards spearheaded Oakland???s offense with nine regular season goals, three of those game-winners, to leave him in a second-place conference tie. He finished just behind Braathen with 20 points to put him fifth in the league.
