Oakland Battles #19 Cincinnati to Scoreless Tie

Box Score Cincinnati, Ohio (Oct. 29, 2003)???C For the fifth time this season Oakland battled to a tie as they went the distance against #19 Cincinnati before ending in a 0-0 draw on the road in Regional men???s soccer action. The Golden Grizzlies have played four games on a Wednesday this season, three of those being away. All three of those matches have gone into overtime. Sophomore Jeff Wiese (Omaha, Neb.) earned his fourth shutout, making five saves in 110:00 minutes of work as Oakland goes to 8-3-5 on the season. Oakland started out passive on offense and only took one shot in the first half. Chris Edwards (Glasgow, Scotland) sent a shot that just skipped over the crossbar. Cincinnati on the other hand came out firing, registering six shots in the first, but only putting two of those on goal. Their first opportunity came in the 16th minute off the foot of Justin Lewis, but Wiese denied the Bearcats??? forward. The Golden Grizzlies came out a little stronger in the second half as they outshot Cincinnati 7-5. Just over ten minutes in junior Bret McNabb (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) put Bearcats??? goalkeeper John Adams to work with a rocket shot on goal, forcing him to make one of his three saves on the night. With less than 10 minutes to play in regulation the two teams traded chances. Edwards sent a blast on net, forcing Adams to make a great save. Four minutes later Cincinnati responded with a shot by Josh Gardner that hit the crossbar. In overtime both squads, once again had a chance to end the game. Wiese shut down Justin Gallegos on a potential game-winner. Gallegos blasted a shot directly at the top left corner of the goal in the eighth minute of the first overtime period, but Wiese punched the ball out of the box. Edwards had a prime opportunity in the same session when he found himself alone at the back post on an Oakland attack. He mistimed the cross though and was unable to connect with the ball. Oakland head coach Gary Parsons thought it was a pretty even game overall. ???Both teams played quite well. Cincinnati had the better of play in the first half and we turned things around and had the better play in the second. There were quality scoring chances on both sides and it proved to be a good game for both teams. For us it was a very good game in terms of preparing for UMKC. I just hope we are able to carry this play over to Saturday.??? This Saturday Oakland will face Mid-Con foe UMKC at 2:00 p.m. (EST). The Kangaroos are undefeated in conference play at 4-0-0, while the Golden Grizzlies are 3-1-0. An Oakland win this weekend would set up an interesting finish as conference play wraps up the following weekend.
