Oakland's Seargeant Resigns as Full-time Assistant Soccer Coach

Longtime assistant men???s soccer coach Steve Seargeant announced today that he has resigned from Oakland University effective July 31, 2002. Seargeant intends to stay involved with Golden Grizzly soccer as his time will permit. ???I have had a great career at Oakland and won???t ever forget my experiences,??? Seargeant said. ???I am going to work more with youth leagues which will give me freedom during the winter months to go home more often to England and spend time with my two boys over there.??? Seargeant, a native of England, has been with OU soccer for 11 years under head coach Gary Parsons. Seargeant served as assistant coach in 1984 and then from 1992-2001. ???Steve Seargeant has worked with me at Oakland for the past 11 years," OU head coach Gary Parsons said. "He has been far more than an assistant soccer coach here. He has been an associate head coach, player personnel advisor, fitness director, associate camp director and most importantly my confidant and best friend. ???Although everyone in the athletic department will miss Sarge???s presence and personality, no one will miss him and what he brings to the table more than I. ???I know Steve???s goals and wishes for the future and I wish him all the best in his endeavors. I only hope we can manage to cope with the loss of such a competent and loyal employee and friend.??? The Oakland soccer program has seen great success in Seargeant???s 11 seasons making five NCAA Tournament appearances. Oakland finished as high as second in the nation under the assistance of Seargeant. In the 11 seasons thus far, the Golden Grizzlies have recorded an 142-46-18 (.748) with Seargeant as the top assistant. In addition to his duties with the Golden Grizzlies varsity soccer program, Seargeant also serves as assistant camp coordinator for the OU Summer Soccer Camps. Seargeant played soccer professionally for 16 years. He has been a camp coach and clinician since retiring from the professional ranks in 1982. A holder of a United States Soccer Federation "D" License, his other coaching stints have included the Detroit Sport Club, Michigan Selects and the North Metro Rangers club program. As a youth, Seargeant had the honor of playing in historic Wembley National Stadium for England's national under 16 team. In the summer of 1994, Seargeant served as a correspondent for USA Today, covering the World Cup games held in the Pontiac Silverdome.
