Box Score Tulsa, OK- The Oakland men's soccer team defeated Oral Roberts 3-2 in Mid-Continent Conference action at the ORU Soccer Complex Saturday night behind a two-goal performance from freshman
Chris Edwards (Glasgow, Norway). This was the second two-goal game for Edwards, who accomplished the feat on October 9th against Michigan State. After falling behind by two goals in the first half, the Golden Grizzlies came roaring back, moving to within one goal before the end of the first half and then netting two more in the second to steal a victory on the road. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 8th minute off a goal from Trey Vaut. Sun Potter then extended Oral Roberts' lead less than ten minutes later when he converted on a penalty kick. It was perserverance, not home field advantage that played a key role this game though as Edwards began Oakland's comeback charge halfway through the opening session. His first goal came in the 25th minute off an assist from
Shahar Ktovim (Holon, Israel). This gave Oakland some life as they cut their deficit in half before intermission. Edwards tied the game with his second goal in the 53rd minute. The Golden Grizzlies went ahead for good 16 minutes later when
Mike Matalavy (Shelby Twp., MI) scored the unassisted game-winner on a blast from 25 yards out. Oakland goalkeeper
Jeff Wiese (Omaha, NE) made five saves in goal for Oakland, while his counterpart Hector Zapata only made two saves on five shots on goal for Oral Roberts. The win improves Oakland's overall record to 6-5-2, and gives them a 2-1 conference mark. Oral Roberts dropped to 6-7 overall, and 1-2 in the Mid-Con. The Golden Grizzlies return to action on Wednesday, October 23rd when they travel to Cincinnati, OH to tangle with the Bearcats in a 7:00 p.m. match.
