Macomb, Illinois--The Oakland University men's soccer team fell for the third consecutive time, 1-0, to Western Illinois Friday afternoon. OU falls to 5-6-2, 2-2 Mid-Con, while WIU improves to 8-7-2, 2-2 Mid-Con. Oakland was out-shot in the first half 12-2 as Western Illinois dictated play with the wind at its back. OU's Mike Skolnik (Livonia/Churchill) kept the Golden Grizzlies in the game as he made six saves in the first 45 minutes. "They controlled the game throughout the entire first half," said Parsons. "We were into the wind and couldn't do much on the offensive end." Western Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the first five minutes of the second half as they took advantage of a misplay in the box by Oakland and Ryan Cavanaugh made it count. Oakland pressured the Leathernecks down the stretch outshooting them 7-3, but came up empty on the road. "I thought we picked up our play in the final 45 minutes. We outplayed them and just couldn't get one in as they took advantage of our mistake." Oakland had nine shots, seven saves, one offside and 20 fouls. Western Illinois had 15 shots, three corner kicks, two saves and 15 fouls. Oakland returns home to face the fourth ranked team in the region, Akron, Sunday, October 28.
