Ohio State Takes Pair Of Pitching Duals From Oakland

Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score Columbus, Ohio ???C Oakland and Ohio State got together for a baseball doubleheader this afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium with both ends of the doubleheader resulting in pitching duals. Unfortunatley for Oakland, the Golden Grizzlies came out on the short end of 2-1 and 2-0 scores. OU held the Buckeyes to two hits in game one, but a pair of unearned runs did the trick for OSU. In game two it was Ohio State???s Greg Prenger that tossed a seven-inning perfect game as he led the Bucks to the sweep. Oakland fell to 12-13 with the losses, while Ohio State improved to 15-10. Paul Phillips (Blissfield, Mich.) pitched well for Oakland in the first game, holding OSU to just one hit through the first four innings, a two-out double by Paul Farinacci in the second. Ohio State???s Trent Luyster was as good, limiting OU to just four hits over the first four frames. It was the Golden Grizzlies that got on the board first, however, scoring in the top of the fifth when Will Tollison (Toledo, Ohio) led off with a walk and advanced to third on a fielder???s choice and an OSU error. With one out Peter Varon???s (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) groundout to third was enough to score Tollison with the first run of the game. A walk, error and single loaded the bases for OSU in the bottom half of the inning with one away. Kyle Bohem (Rockford, Mich.) came on to pitch for Oakland, but a passed ball and a lineout to left plated a pair of unearned runs for Ohio State. Kyle Brown then came out of the bullpen for Ohio State and shutdown the Golden Grizzlies the rest of the way, allowing three hits over the last two innings to pick up the save. It was all Prenger in the second game, as he cruised through the Oakland lineup. He faced the minimum of 21 hitters in the seven-inning contest, striking out six along the way. Ohio State got the only run it needed in the first when Mike Rabin, who led off the game for OSU by getting hit by the pitch, scored from second with two outs on a throwing error by Ty Herriott (Ostrander, Ohio). The Buckeyes added an insurance run in the third on Kelly Houser RBI double. Billy Schmieder (Chillicothe, Ohio) also went all the way on the mound for Oakland, allowing six hits and one earned run in his six innings, striking out three without a walk. Oakland will be back in action on Friday when the Golden Grizzlies travel to Eastern Michigan for another doubleheader of baseball action.
