A native of Lleida, Spain, Raquel Ferrer-Bernad’s collegiate career spanned three stops and allowed her to see a few different regions of the United States.
She began her college playing days at Casper College in Wyoming, starting 58 games over the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons for the Thunderbirds and averaging seven points and just over three assists in 26.4 minutes.
Demonstrating an ability to take care of the basketball and find her open teammates, Ferrer-Bernad’s junior college success drew the attention of coaches, and she made the jump to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level in 2020 when she joined the Florida International Panthers of Conference USA (CUSA).
Playing her home games in Miami and roughly only nine miles away from the Hurricanes’ campus in Coral Gables, Ferrer-Bernad showed her talents could translate to the sport’s highest level during her time with the Panthers, playing in 55 contests in her two years with the program and averaging 3.4 assists as a junior in 2020-21, a figure that was 12th-best nationally.
Electing to use her final season of collegiate eligibility elsewhere, Ferrer-Bernad was one of three impactful transfers the Oakland Golden Grizzlies brought in ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, as she was joined by junior forward Alexis Johnson, a former member of the Marshall Thundering Herd, and fellow junior and ex-Louisiana-Monroe Warhawk Linda van Schaik.
Playing in all 30 of the Golden Grizzlies’ games during her lone year as a student-athlete in Rochester, including 22 starts at the guard spots, Ferrer-Bernad tallied averages of 3.5 points, 1.9 assists and 1.4 rebounds in just under 21-and-a-half minutes-per-night and helped serve as a veteran mentor in the backcourt for Horizon League Freshman of the Year Brooke Quarles-Daniels.
Continuing her academic studies, Ferrer-Bernad joined head coach Jeff Tungate’s staff as a graduate assistant prior to the 2023-24 season and her recent experience as a Horizon League student-athlete makes her an asset for the current Golden Grizzlies to utilize.
