Mychal Covington was named assistant coach on August 9, 2017.
A native of Pontiac, Mich., Covington played under Greg Kampe for the Golden Grizzlies from 1998-2002. Prior to Oakland, He has spent the last 11 years working and coaching at Pontiac High School, Melvindale Academy for Business and Technology and Cornerstone Health and Technology High School. He also spent six years as head coach of AAU's Detroit Stars Basketball Club.
Covington was a point guard for Coach Kampe and finished eighth in the country with 7.1 assists per game during his senior season, ending his career fifth all-time with 514 assists. Covington helped lead the Golden Grizzlies to the Mid-Con regular season title in their first-ever year of Division I competition in 1999-2000.
