Women's Soccer Opens Conference Play Against Cleveland State

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies return home after nearly a week away from game action, opening Horizon League play against Cleveland State this weekend.

Oakland is looking to get back into the win column after a loss to Valparaiso on the road on Sept. 10. The Golden Grizzlies are now on the other side of a gauntlet of a non-conference schedule that saw multiple matchups against teams in the tough MAC. With Horizon League play now here, Oakland officially enters the meat and potatoes of its season.

So far this season, Oakland's goalkeeping has been at the top of the league. Keeper Norah Schmidt ranks among the top six in the conference in saves (23), goals allowed (9), save percentage (.719) and saves per game (3.83).

The Vikings travel to Rochester still looking for their first win of the season, holding an 0-7 record. Not only are they winless, but they are still searching for their first goal of the season.
Despite the lack of offensive production, Cleveland State's Sidney Nicholas ranks eighth in the conference in shots on goal (7).

As a team, Cleveland State is just a mark behind Oakland in offensive aggression, averaging 4.86 shots on goal per game to Oakland's 5.67.

The Vikings also rank low on the defensive ladder among Horizon League squads, having given up the third-most goals (20) of any team.

With a 6-5-5 all-time record against the Vikings, the Golden Grizzlies have only lost to Cleveland State once in the previous five meetings and haven't lost to them at home since 2021. Last year's meeting between the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw in Rochester, with Mallory Anderson scoring Oakland's lone goal.

The Golden Grizzlies will look to make a strong start to conference play and put themselves in a top conference spot to begin the league slate. The game takes place on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. in Rochester and will be streamed on ESPN+.
