GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Golden Grizzlies were unable to come away with a win in the opening day of a road series with the Phoenix, despite taking early leads in both games.
GAME 1
Oakland narrowly lost the opening game of the series by a final score of 6-5 at King Park. The Golden Grizzlies' offense tallied 13 hits, including two doubles and a home run, but was unable to overcome the Phoenix's early four-run first inning.
Oakland initiated the game with a strong start as
Maggie Murphy hit a home run to left field in the top of the first, driving in two runs and putting the Golden Grizzlies ahead early. However, the Phoenix responded with four runs in their half of the first inning, capitalizing on a fielding error and a two-RBI single by Sara Ebner. The inning concluded with the Phoenix leading 4-2.
In the third inning,
Addison Caldwell scored on a single to right center by
Kayla Turmell, narrowing the gap. The Phoenix remained scoreless in their half, as the score tallied 5-3 in favor of Green Bay.
Oakland added two more runs in the fifth inning.
Autumn Liebhauser doubled down the left field line, bringing in
Storm Kentros, who was pinch running for Murphy.
Taylor Carraway followed with a double to left field, scoring Liebhauser. This brought the Golden Grizzlies within one run and the score now 6-5.
Despite a strong defensive effort in the final innings, the Golden Grizzlies were unable to score again. The Phoenix maintained their lead, securing a narrow victory. The final score was the Phoenix 6, Golden Grizzlies 5.
Kenna Bommarito closed out the game for the Golden Grizzlies, delivering a strong performance with 1 1/3 innings pitched, allowing no hits, and striking out three batters. Despite the efforts of the pitching staff, the Golden Grizzlies' defense struggled to contain the Phoenix's offense.
Murphy led the team with three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs. Caldwell scored two runs and contributed a stolen base. Turmell added three hits and one RBI, complementing her performance with a stolen base. Liebhauser recorded two hits, one double, and one RBI, while also scoring a run and stealing a base.
GAME 2
Oakland nearly mounted a seventh inning comeback in game two, scoring three runs in the final frame, but ultimately fell 7-9 under the lights.
In the second inning, the Golden Grizzlies took a 2-1 lead as
Kenna Bommarito singled to right field, followed by Kam Troyer's single down the left field line. A throwing error allowed Bommarito to score, and
Addison Caldwell's single brought in Troyer, making it 2-1 for the Golden Grizzlies at the end of the second inning.
The third inning saw both teams adding runs.
Kayla Turmell doubled to left center and scored on
Autumn Liebhauser's double. Later, Troyer singled to right center, driving in Liebhauser. However, Wisconsin-Green Bay responded with five runs, highlighted by Jenna Redders' double, which brought in three runs. Wisconsin-Green Bay led 6-4 by the end of the third inning.
In the sixth inning, Wisconsin-Green Bay extended its lead with two additional runs. Aidyn Messman and Gracie Anderson both scored, making it 9-4 in favor of the Phoenix.
The Golden Grizzlies mounted a comeback in the seventh inning. Caldwell and
Maggie Murphy both singled, and
Storm Kentros, as a pinch runner, scored on a double by Turmell. Turmell then scored on a groundout by
Taylor Carraway, closing the gap to 9–7. However, the rally ended there, and Wisconsin-Green Bay secured the victory.
Bommarito pitched a complete game for the Golden Grizzlies, throwing 6 innings and delivering 147 pitches.
Caldwell led the Golden Grizzlies with three hits, scoring once and driving in a run while also stealing a base. Turmell contributed significantly by scoring twice, hitting two doubles, and collecting two RBIs. Bommarito pitched a complete game, striking out two over 6 innings despite allowing nine runs. Liebhauser added to the team's efforts with a double and an RBI in her lone hit.
Oakland returns to the diamond tomorrow, Apr. 25 at 1 p.m. ET for a series finale in Green Bay.
