EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Oakland Golden Grizzlies (10-21, 5-7 HL) picked up their second Big Ten win of the season with an 11-9 victory over Michigan State (12-22, 6-12 B1G) on Tuesday night at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium. Oakland's offensive effort was highlighted by two home runs and three doubles, contributing to a big total of 13 hits. Despite a five-run surge from the Spartans in the seventh inning, Oakland maintained its lead with consistent scoring across multiple frame. With the win, the Golden Grizzlies have taken care of both Big Ten opponents in the state, a first for the program since 2016.
Junior
Aidan Orr led the charge with two home runs, contributing three RBIs in his first collegiate multi-home run game. Junior
Ben Clark also made an impact at the plate, collecting a season-high three hits, including a double, while driving in three runs, including the go-ahead. Fifth-year
Kyle Revere scored twice, going 3-for-4 at the plate, as freshman
Cameron Spezia recorded his first hit of the season in the top of the seventh. On the mound,
Jaxson Easterlin secured his first win of the season, pitching 2.2 innings to close out the ballgame, without allowing a hit or a run.
Michigan State took an early lead in the first inning with an RBI double and an RBI single, securing a 2-0 advantage.
Oakland responded in the second frame as grad senior
Carter Hain walked and later scored on redshirt-sophomore
Lucas Day's RBI double. Clark and Revere added RBI singles, putting Oakland ahead 3-2. Michigan State's Thomas scored on a sacrifice fly, leveling the score at the end of the inning.
In the third inning, sophomore
Aidan Schuck was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on wild pitches. Hain's RBI single brought Schuck home, giving Oakland a one-run lead.
Oakland extended its lead in the fourth inning with Revere's RBI double and Schuck's sacrifice fly, making it 6-3 before Orr's two-run homer in the sixth inning increased Oakland's lead to 8-3. The Spartans added a run in the bottom half off of an RBI single.
MSU surged ahead in the seventh inning. A two-run double followed by a two-RBI double was a part of a five-run inning, giving Michigan State a 9-8 lead.
Orr homered again off the 2-2 pitch to right-center field in the eighth inning to tie the game at nine runs.
In the ninth inning, Clark's two-RBI double put Oakland back in front, scoring Day, who walked, and redshirt-sophomore
Boston Halloran, who was hit by a pitch, securing an 11-9 victory.
Freshman
Josh Rosenblitt started on the mound for the second time this season, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing two earned runs off of five hits, while collecting a strikeout. Junior
Blake Sehlke followed, delivering an inning of work without conceding a hit before Easterlin closed the game with a strong 2.2 innings performance, securing the win for the boys in Black and Gold.
The Golden Grizzlies are back in Rochester to host Cleary tomorrow, April 15 at Oakland Baseball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
