KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Oakland traveled to the west side of the state for a matchup against Western Michigan, where despite a combined four home runs on the day, Oakland fell in both legs of the doubleheader against the Broncos.
GAME 1
The Golden Grizzlies battled hard in the doubleheader opener, but ultimately fell in a wild slugfest, 16–13. Despite the loss, Oakland had their most explosive offensive game of the season, posting a season-high with 15 hits and 13 runs.
The Grizzlies stormed out of the gate with a dominant first inning.
Maggie Murphy kick-started the action with a solo shot to left center. With the bases alive,
Brooklyn Wyczalek punched a single up the middle, bringing home two. Then,
Taylor Carraway unleashed a three-run blast to left, putting us ahead 6–0 at the close of the first.
In the third, Oakland tacked on another as Wyczalek crossed the plate on a throwing error, extending our lead to 7–2 after WMU answered back with two runs of their own.
The fifth inning saw the Grizzlies stretch their lead even further.
Autumn Liebhauser launched a two-run homer, and Murphy tripled to drive in another, pushing the score to 10–9, though the Broncos responded with a three-run reply.
As the seventh inning rolled around, Oakland mounted a fierce rally with three additional runs. Murphy's clutch double to right center brought in two, closing the gap, but WMU managed to hang on, sealing a 16–13 victory behind a seven-run sixth inning.
Offensively,
Maggie Murphy was electric, delivering a season-high three hits, featuring a home run, a triple, and a double, and driving in four runs.
Taylor Carraway was also instrumental with three hits, including a homer, and three RBI.
Brooklyn Wyczalek chipped in with two hits and two RBI, while
Autumn Liebhauser showcased her power with a home run and two RBI.
GAME 2
The Golden Grizzlies faced a tough outing in game number two, falling 9-2. Oakland's offensive spark came courtesy of a fifth-inning homer that delivered both runs.
After taking a 3-0 lead early, WMU surged ahead with four more runs in the fourth inning as Niles struck a two-run homer, followed by a solo shot from Jordan Smith, widening the gap to 7-0.
The Golden Grizzlies answered back in the fifth when
Autumn Liebhauser launched a two-run home run, bringing
Kamryn Troyer home and narrowing the deficit to 7-2.
In the sixth inning, the Broncos sealed the deal with a two-run homer by C. Tighe, wrapping up the game at 9-2 in favor of Western Michigan.
Kamryn Troyer made her mark with a hit, a run scored, and a stolen base.
Addison Kopp contributed a hit and two assists in the field. Leading our offense, Liebhauser notched a home run, marking back-to-back games with homers, and two RBIs.
