ROCHESTER, Mich. — Oakland (4-17, 3-3 HL) secured an 8-4 victory over Northern Kentucky (10-12, 3-3 HL) in the series finale on Sunday at the Oakland Baseball Field. The Golden Grizzlies jumped to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding two more in the fourth. Fifth-year
Kyle Revere contributed with a home run, while the team capitalized on the Norse's two errors. Northern Kentucky scored two runs in both the first and ninth innings, but could not overcome Oakland's consistent scoring.
Revere led the team with three hits and three RBIs, including a double along with the late home run. Redshirt-junior
Sam Griffith contributed two hits and scored twice as sophomore
Aidan Schuck drove in two runs, providing with an offensive spark. On the mound, redshirt-sophomore
Luke Riggs pitched 1.1 innings, earning three strikeouts while allowing no hits.
The game started with a high-scoring first inning where Northern Kentucky's Jake Paulick homered to left field, driving in two. Oakland quickly responded when Clark singled, followed by Revere's single, which allowed Clark to score on a throwing error. Revere then scored on a wild pitch, and
Lucas Day added another run on an RBI groundout for a 3-2 lead after one inning.
In the third inning, Oakland extended its lead with redshirt-sophomore
Tony Konopiots grounding out to bring Day home, making it 4-2. The fourth inning saw further scoring from Oakland as sophomore
Andrew Landis walked and later scored on a Revere double. Griffith added another run to the tally, putting Oakland ahead 6-2 through four innings.
The eighth inning was highlighted from Revere hitting a two-run homer, bringing Griffith home and increasing Oakland's lead up six runs. Northern Kentucky managed to score two more runs in the ninth inning with a single from a two-RBI single, but Oakland's lead held firm.
Freshman
Ben Green delivered a solid performance on the mound with five innings of work, allowing two earned runs on eight hits while striking out four in his first career win. Senior
Jaxson Easterlin contributed 1.1 innings of hitless relief, as Riggs impressed in his 1.1 innings with three strikeouts. Freshman
Will Paxson conceded two earned runs on one hit in just 1/3 of an inning and earned his first career strikeout before Landis came in to pitch from center field to close things down for Oakland.
In their next game, the Golden Grizzlies will travel to face Michigan for an in-state midweek match on Tuesday, March 24 in Ann Arbor. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on BTN+.
