Baxter nears Double-Double as Oakland Falls to Vikings in Regular Season Finale

CLEVELAND, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies fell to Cleveland State 73-59 in the final game of the regular season. Oakland made several comeback efforts in the second half, but wasn't able to bring the rally effort to full fruition.

Oakland opened the first quarter with a strong offensive display, highlighted by Makenzie Luehring's early 3-pointer at 9:30, assisted by Filippa Goula. Oakland's defensive efforts were marked by Layla Gold's steal at 9:07, helping to keep the pressure on the Vikings. Goula's 3-pointer at 6:43, again with an assist from Gold, contributed to Oakland gaining a narrow lead. The quarter concluded with Gold hitting a crucial jumper with 21 seconds remaining, securing a 21-18 lead for Oakland over CSU. 

The Golden Grizzlies drained five threes in the opening frame, attacking the zone of the Vikings and converting on open drive and kick triples.

Luehring continued to push the momentum in favor of Oakland with a 3-pointer at 6:02, however, the Vikings responded with a series of key plays, including a 3-pointer by Sarah Hurley at 1:56, which sparked a decisive 11-2 run. Gold managed a late jumper, but the quarter ended with CSU leading 36-28.

Oakland narrowed the gap again with a strong third-quarter effort, highlighted by truple by Gold at 3:13, reducing the Vikings' lead. Sereniti Roberts-Adams contributed with effective scoring in the paint, supported by a flurry of Luehring assists in the frame. Despite this push, the Vikings maintained their lead by the end of the quarter, finishing ahead 46-41.

In the fourth quarter, Oakland made a strong bid to close the gap, highlighted by Goula's early three. Even with a late 3-pointer by Lianna Baxter with 59 seconds remaining, the Vikings maintained control. The game concluded with CSU securing a 73-59 victory after a decisive final frame.

Makenzie Luehring scored 15 points and recorded five assists, contributing significantly to Oakland's offensive efforts. Lianna Baxter added 18 points, including four 3-pointers, while also collecting eight rebounds in one of her best performances of the season. Filippa Goula made three 3-pointers and provided four assists, showcasing her ability from beyond the arc. Layla Gold contributed with nine points and two steals, adding defensive pressure to Oakland's performance.

The Golden Grizzlies await the end of every team's day of action to see where they will play in the first round of the Horizon League Championship this upcoming week.
