INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Horizon League has announced that Oakland men's soccer defender Zach Townsend and goalkeeper Cole Thompson have been named to the 2026 Horizon League Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete Team, the conference announced.

The Golden Grizzlies are represented by two of their most consistent contributors and captains, who throughout the season have elevated the standard of the program on and off the pitch.

In his final season at Oakland Townsend continued to serve as a key presence in Oakland's lineup throughout the 2026 campaign. He appeared and started in every match, playing every minute of the season. Townsend contributed offensively as well, recording two goals, while providing experience, physicality and leadership to the Golden Grizzlies' defensive unit.

Now a two-time All-Academic/Scholar-Athlete Team selection, Townsend adds another academic honor to an impressive Oakland career. He previously earned Horizon League All-Academic Team recognition in 2024 and was named to the 2024 Horizon League All-League First Team.

Thompson continued his season as Oakland's leader between the posts. The keeper recorded 65 saves and four shutouts during the 2026 season. He also delivered several standout performances, including a career-high 11-save outing against Milwaukee on Oct. 10 and an eight-save shutout against Northern Kentucky on Oct. 30.

Thompson's impact extended beyond the season's statistical contributions. His ability to organize the defense, make timely stops and provide a steady presence in goal helped establish the foundation for Oakland's defensive efforts. He also earned Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 12 after recording a shutout against Green Bay and his career-high save performance against Milwaukee.

Together, Townsend and Thompson represent the standard of leadership and dedication within the Oakland men's soccer program. Their recognition on the All-Academic Team reflects the importance of setting an example in the classroom, in training and on matchday while representing the Golden Grizzlies.
