Men's Soccer Celebrates Senior Night With Must-Win Match Against NKU

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies are in the thick of the postseason hunt and are getting down to business as they prepare for their final home match of the regular season, looking to leave Senior Day with a win over Northern Kentucky (NKU).

The conference standings are packed, with just three points separating second and eighth place. Oakland currently sits in eighth place with 11 points but still has a strong chance to climb the standings, secure the No. 2 seed and even host a postseason match.

A flurry of ties throughout their conference slate, resulting in a 2-1-5 Horizon League record, has placed Oakland firmly in the thick of the standings.

The Golden Grizzlies fell 2-0 in their last outing to Bowling Green on Oct. 20. With 10 days of rest before two of their most important matches of the season, Oakland hosts the Norse on Halloween Eve.

Oakland will face the struggling Norse in its final home match of the regular season, with a win crucial to the Golden Grizzlies' postseason hopes.

NKU has had a disappointing 2026 season, with just one win to its name. With a 1-12-2 overall record and a 1-6-1 mark in Horizon League play, the Norse earned their lone win in a 5-1 victory over IU Indy on Sept. 19. Since then, NKU has lost seven of its last eight matches.

Defensively, the Norse have dug themselves a hole. Despite scoring 11 goals in conference play, they have allowed 20 goals, the most in the conference. They have allowed opponents to score three or more goals in eight matches this season, including their most recent contest, a 3-0 home loss to Detroit Mercy.

With just 33 shots on goal, accuracy and the ability to generate high-quality scoring chances have also been areas for improvement for NKU.

Carlos Merce leads the NKU attack with a team-high five goals. He also ranks among the conference's top 10 in shots (25) and shots on goal (10) in conference play.

In 11 all-time head-to-head meetings, Oakland has lost to NKU at home just once. Last year's meeting saw Oakland earn a 2-0 road win, with Miller Knestrict and Andriy Bilous finding the back of the net for the Golden Grizzlies.

Oakland looks to avoid an NKU spoiler on Friday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
