ROCHESTER, Mich. – To close out the regular season, the Oakland University swimming and diving team travels to Cleveland State's Busbey Natatorium on January 30 to compete in a league dual meet, starting at 4 PM.
For the fifth straight year, Oakland and Cleveland State will meet for the final dual meet of the regular season before the Horizon League Championships. Since the 2008-09 season, the two programs have faced each other every year during the regular season.
WOMEN'S PREVIEW
In their last meet, the women delivered a strong performance against Wayne State, winning 147-88 on Senior Day and honoring four graduating student-athletes. With six event sweeps and eight individual first-place finishes from different athletes, Oakland made the most of its final home event of the season.
With victories in the 50 free and 100 back, freshman Kendra Venter was named Horizon League Swimmer of the Week for January 21-27, joining fellow freshman Lydia Soldatke and Charisse Hickman in earning the honor this season. Other top competitors for the Golden Grizzlies include Avery Beal, Elizabeth Woollcott, and Kelley Hassett.
MEN'S PREVIEW
The men also secured a win over Wayne State, 143-92, picking up three event sweeps and nine different individual victories. Of the six seniors celebrating their final home meet, five contributed to a first-place finish in one of the 13 events.
Nicholas Karel Subagyo earned his first Horizon League Swimmer of the Week honor after his season-best performance in the 1650 free, finishing first with a time of 15:34.75. He currently holds the league's top time in the event this season. Harry Nicholson, Owen Cox, and Ike Martinez were also top competitors for Oakland.
SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
This season, both the men's and women's teams are undefeated at home in dual meets and have just one loss overall, falling to Horizon League competitor IU Indianapolis in their season opener. The Vikings have also faced three additional Horizon League opponents, earning wins over Milwaukee, Green Bay, and Youngstown State.
The Golden Grizzlies hold a 17-0 record against the the Green and White in the regular season. Last year, the men's team posted a 195-105 victory, while the women earned a 163-137 win. Multiple athletes reached the podium for Oakland, including Subagyo, who was named the OU Prairie Farms Male Student-Athlete of the Week for his performance.
At their most recent meet, the Cleveland City Classic, both Cleveland State teams defeated John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace. The home event featured multiple individual Vikings victories, with Landon Harman, Haley Palmer, and Gracie Chelf standing out as top performers.
