ROCHESTER, Mich. — Oakland (9-9, 5-2 HL) fell to Wright State (11-7, 6-1 HL) 94-84 on Sunday in a packed OU Credit Union O'rena. Despite a strong second-half effort, where they outscored the Raiders 54-45, the Golden Grizzlies could not overcome a 19-point halftime deficit. The home team capitalized on turnovers, scoring 28 points off the visitors' 18 turnovers, but was outmatched in the paint, where the Raiders tallied 48 points.
Senior
Brody Robinson led the team with a commanding career-high 35 points, including four three-pointers, and added in four steals. His impressive performance included setting a season-high by making 9 field goals. Fifth-year
Tuburu Naivalurua contributed 15 points, converting five of eight free throws, and collected six rebounds. Junior
Khoi Thurmon scored a season-high nine points and recorded three steals and despite seeing limited time on the court due to foul trouble, junior
Isaac Garrett posted two blocks and tallied six points in 18 minutes.
Oakland opened the first half with a strong defensive effort, registering six steals and four blocks. Despite their defensive pressure, Oakland struggled offensively against the Raiders' shooting efficiency. Garrett and Robinson contributed key baskets, with Robinson recording a three-pointer and a fast-break layup late in the half to narrow the deficit.
WSU capitalized on their opportunities in the paint, scoring 28 points inside and maintaining a shooting advantage. Solomon Callaghan and TJ Burch were instrumental in their scoring drives, helping the Raiders build a lead. The half ended with Oakland trailing by 19, following a late scoring surge by Oakland to close the gap.
In the second half, Oakland demonstrated resilience with a strong offensive outburst, particularly from Robinson, who added a series of successful field goals and free throws. Oakland capitalized on turnovers, with Thurmon and fifth-year
Brett White II executing key steals that facilitated fast breaks down the court. White II has now recorded at least 11 total points in two consecutive games. Despite the Raiders' continued scoring, including several long shots and free throws, Oakland managed to outscore the visitors in the half. The game concluded with Oakland narrowing the deficit to only 10, but the Raiders maintained a lead until the final buzzer.
The Golden Grizzlies will head to Wisconsin for a two-game road trip, starting with a matchup against Milwaukee in the city, on Thursday, Jan. 15, for another nationally televised game on ESPNU.
