Second Minute Goal by Cole Helps Women's Soccer Earn 1-1 Draw to Kent State

ROCHESTER, Mich. — Oakland and Kent State played to a 1-1 draw at the Oakland Soccer Field in a closely contested, physical match on Sunday.

Fireworks struck immediately for Oakland, as Brae Cole quickly put Oakland on the scoreboard with a goal in the second minute with an amazing display of power, slamming the ball over the keeper's head on a direct free kick from near midfield.

The Golden Flashes knotted the score in the 26th minute as Mia Cleroux retrieved her own deflected shot, sneaking the ball past Maryn Weiger on the rebound for a goal.

Oakland maintained offensive pressure, evidenced by multiple shots from Olivia Norton and Cole as they outshot Kent State 10 to 8 in the first half, as the score held to a 1-1 tie after 45 minutes of play.

With the game in the balance, the Golden Grizzlies played with a high sense of urgency, looking to get the win, taking five shots in the closing 20 minutes as Alli Leonard, Olivia Norton, Shannon Brown, and Kimee Liu all had attempts to regain the lead. None of the shots were able to strike gold, as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Weiger recorded a season-best seven saves over 90 minutes, including a game-winning save in the 89th minute. Cole scored her team-best fourth goal of the season and led the team with five shots, three of which were on goal. She now ranks second in the conference in goals and has scored four of Oakland's six goals thus far this season.

Norton contributed three shots as well, one of which was on target. Benavides managed a shot on goal from her position in defense.

In their next game, Oakland travels to the East Coast for their next match, taking on St. Bonaventure in their final non-conference match of the season on Sept. 14.
