ROCHESTER, Mich. — Oakland and Cleveland State University battled to a 1-1 draw at Oakland Soccer Field on Sunday, with second half goals from both sides resulting in the draw.
Oakland came out the gate hot, with the Golden grizzlies creating four shots in the first 12 minutes. The Golden Grizzlies dominated possession in the opening frame, keeping the ball in their attacking third and pressuring Cleveland State at all times.
Over the first 45 minutes Oakland would outshoot CSU 9-to-2 and earn five corners to the Vikings' one, but the squad couldn't muster up a score, leaving the game at a scoreless draw headed into the half.
The second half saw the offensive pressure balance out, with both sides pushing for a crucial score. Oakland seized the lead in the 64th minute when
Mallory Anderson found the back of the net, assisted by
Isabella Bierod and
Rose Gevanthor on a picture perfect wide attack and cross into the box to give Oakland a 1-0 advantage. Cleveland State quickly equalized just two minutes later with a goal from Tanji Sarver, stopping Oakland's momentum and evening the score to where it would ultimately stay for the remainder of the match.
The Golden Grizzlies won the battle of shots (13 to 10), but were able to put just two of them on goal. Anderson led the charge with a team-best four shots, including the one that turned into her second goal of the season.
Ella Shapiro and Bierod each tallied two shots as well.
The next challenge for the Oakland team comes on Sunday, September 28, as they travel to Dayton, Ohio, to face off against Wright State University. The match is set for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
