HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — The Golden Grizzlies were unable to pull out a win in their conference match, falling 0-4 to Northern Kentucky.
The first half featured Northern Kentucky taking an early lead with a goal from Megan Molner in the 8th minute. Oakland responded with offensive pressure, generating multiple opportunities including shots from
Mallory Anderson in the 3rd and 24th minutes, along with a
Brae Cole shot on goal in the 23rd minute, Oakland continued to pepper the NKU keeper with shots, while also earning three corner kicks in the opening half. Both teams ended the half with four shots, while Oakland held the Norse to just one corner kick. Despite the pressure, the Golden Grizzlies trailed 0-1 after the opening 45 minutes.
The second half commenced with the Norse extending their lead, with Lilly Yordy finding the net in the 46th minute. Oakland continued to fight back, securing three more consecutive corner kicks by the 56th minute, and
Ella Shapiro registered a shot attempt shortly thereafter. Despite
Maryn Weiger's efforts, including two notable saves at the 58th minute, NKU's consistent attacking resulted in two additional goals, concluding the match with a 4-0 scoreline.
Anderson and Cole led Oakland with two shots each, one on target each as well.
Bailey Giddings and
Ella Shapiro added one shot each to the team's overall attack. While NKU won the battle of shots taken (14 to 6) and shots on goal (7 to 2), Oakland finished with two more corner kicks than the Norse (7 to 5), but were just unable to capitalize on their set pieces.
Oakland returns home for their next match to host Cleveland State on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m.
