Men's Soccer Heads to PFW for First League Game of Season

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Golden Grizzlies begin Horizon League play with a trip to face the Mastodons at Purdue Fort Wayne (PFW) on Saturday.

Oakland plays the second of three straight road games, wrapping up a stretch that features seven of its first eight contests away from home.

In their last outing, the Golden Grizzlies dropped a 3-2 nail-biter at Michigan State. After conceding three goals in the first 25 minutes, Oakland stormed back and nearly secured its first win of the season. Evan Combs and Tim Allos each scored, marking the first career goal for Combs and the second of the season for Allos.

Tied for second in the conference in goals scored (8) and assists (9), Oakland's offense is coming together as one of the league's top forces.

Against the Mastodons, the Golden Grizzlies have been dominant, holding a 10-1-1 all-time record while going unbeaten in the last six meetings. Oakland has not lost in Fort Wayne since 2012.

PFW enters the matchup 2-0-3 overall and 2-0-1 at home after posting a 3-0 win over Manchester on Thursday. Saturday's contest will be the Mastodons' fourth consecutive home game.

PFW is anchored by a stout defense that has allowed just four goals this season, the second fewest in the Horizon League. Offensively, they are led by Iann Topete, the conference's second-leading goal scorer with three tallies. Forward Shane Anderson ranks second in the league in shots (13), one ahead of Oakland's Christopher Jean-Léger (12).

Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, with the game streaming live on ESPN+ as Horizon League play kicks into full gear.
