TOLEDO, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies fell on the road to the Rockets 0-1 at Paul Hotmer Field in a hard-nosed, defensive effort from both sides on Sunday.
The first half between Oakland and Toledo remained scoreless, with both teams displaying solid defensive efforts. Oakland's
Alli Leonard came close to breaking the deadlock with a shot that hit the top woodwork in the 31st minute. Neither team was able to manufacture many good looks in the opening 45 minutes, leaving the score tied at 0-0 by the end of the half.
The second half saw Oakland maintaining a strong defensive stance, highlighted by
Maryn Weiger's impressive saves around the 57th and 67th minutes, marking two of her four saves on the day.Â
Despite Toledo's persistent offensive pressure, including a goal from Kaema Amachree assisted by Keira Billis in the 69th minute, Oakland's defense remained vigilant. Leonard and
Kimee Liu both attempted to find the net for Oakland, with their shots being well-defended by Toledo's goalkeeper, Agnes Stenlund, maintaining the 0-1 scoreline by the end of the half.
Weiger stood out as the goalkeeper for Oakland, registering four saves from 11 shots faced, allowing only one goal in her 90 minutes of play. Liu and
Mallory Anderson each managed to put one shot on goal, demonstrating their offensive contributions. Leonard led the team with two shots, one of which was on goal, showcasing her ability to create opportunities.
Despite losing the battle of shots 11 to four, the Golden Grizzlies were more accurate on goal as a whole, putting three shots on goal compared to four by Toledo.
Looking ahead, the Golden Grizzlies will host Ohio University on Thursday, August 28 at 6 p.m.
