Softball Earns Win in Metro Series Finale as Herrington Earns 100th Career Hit

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland ended their series against the Detroit Mercy with a split doubleheader, closing the series with a win as Madi Herrington eclipsed 100 career hits in the finale, avoiding the sereis sweep to the Titans.

GAME 1

Despite a dominant outing in the circle from freshman right-hander Kenna Bommarito, who threw 7.1 innings and struck out six batters, the Golden Grizzlies fell in a tightly contested, extra innings matchup to Detroit Mercy, 1-0, on a cold Wednesday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning after the Titans strung together a pair of hits. A two-out single by Liv Peterson drove in Allison Fluker, who had reached earlier on her second hit of the game. It was the only blemish on Bommarito's otherwise outstanding performance.

Offensively, Oakland scattered six hits across the lineup but couldn't generate the key hit needed to break through, leaving five runners on base throughout the game.

Freshman Kayla Turmell led the way at the plate with a 2-for-3 day, collecting singles in the third and sixth innings. Alexa Kownacki added a double, while Brooklyn Plitz, Kamryn Troyer, and Alyssa Balcom each chipped in with a hit.

Oakland threatened in the top of the sixth after Kownacki's leadoff double, but the Titans' defense turned a crucial double play to end the threat. The Golden Grizzlies also put runners on in the second and fourth innings, but couldn't push anyone across the plate. They even threatened in the top of the eighth inning, with runners on the corners, but couldn't add a run to their tally.

GAME 2

The Golden Grizzlies earned their revenge in the final game, coming away with a much-needed 7-4 victory.

Oakland collected nine hits and used a balanced offensive attack to earn the league victory, scoring in five of seven innings. Kenna Bommarito locked down the save with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two and stranding multiple runners to preserve the win.

Detroit Mercy struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Oakland responded quickly. Kayla Turmell scored in the second on an Alexa Kownacki single, after reaching on an error, knotting the game at 1-1.

The Golden Grizzlies took the lead in the third, manufacturing a run after Jenna Johnston blooped an RBI single to center field.

Oakland padded the lead with a big fifth inning, scoring three runs on two hits, including an RBI single by Turmell to extend the lead to 5-1.

Detroit Mercy clawed back in the bottom of the fifth, plating three runs to make it a one-run game, 5-4. Bommarito entered in relief of Alyssa Balcom and extinguished the threat, inducing a flyout to end the inning with runners aboard.

Oakland added insurance in the top of the seventh. Taylor Carraway knocked a RBI single to make it 7-4.

From there, Bommarito shut the door, working around a single and wild pitch in the seventh to earn her fourth save of the season.

Balcom (5-9) earned the win, going 4.1 innings and allowing three earned runs while striking out five. Johnston, Turmell, Kownacki, and Carraway all tallied RBIs, while Herrington scored twice and stole a base.

The Golden Grizzlies return to their home field for a weekend series against Purdue Fort Wayne, beginning on Saturday, Apr. 12 at 3 p.m.
