Softball Escapes Series with Mastodons With Opening Win; Fall Short in Extras to Close

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies were able to take a win away from their series with the Mastodons, but were unable to win the overall series as they dropped two out of three games to Purdue Fort Wayne (PFW).

GAME 1

Oakland opened with a statement win in the series opener on Friday, taking a 3-1 victory to open up the weekend.

The Golden Grizzlies kicked off the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning, highlighted by a RBI single by Alexa Kownacki to put Oakland up 2-0 right out the gate.

The Mastodons would respond with a single run in the second, via a RBI double from Brooke Lickey, to make the score 2-1.

Kam Troyer would continue the trend of runs scored in three consecutive innings, bringing home the final score of the game with a sacrifice fly in the thrid as Oakland led 3-1. From there on out the game turned into a pitching duel, where freshman pitcher Kenna Bommarito dominated from inside the circle.

En route to earning her fifth win of the season, Bommarito tossed a complete game, allowing just five hits and striking oit four batters.

Oakland would end the game with seven hits compared to five from the Mastodons, led by Madi Herrington who finished the day going 2-for-3 from the plate, scoring two runs.

GAME 2

The closing day of the series began with dramatics, as the Mastodons got their revenge for the opener, using all of eight innings to emerge with a 4-3 win.

The Golden Grizzlies struck the scoreboard first again in this one as Kam Troyer sent a RBI double down the left field line.

PFW would briefly take the lead behind a two-run fourth inning, but the Golden Grizzlies would tack on two more runs in the bottom half of the fourth as Taylor Carraway lined a RBI single into the outfield to give Oakland a 3-2 lead.

After a sac bunt from PFW in the seventh inning scored a run and extended the game into extra innings, Alexa Cater would close it out as she slammed a go-ahead solo home run to give the Mastodons the lead, that they would hold onto in the bottom half of the eighth.

Troyer had herself one of the best games of the year, making up for four (4-for-4) of Oakland's six hits in the game.

GAME 3

The series finale went a little different than the two close contests tht came before, with PFW taking the series win in a 1-8 hit-fest.

Oakland would score their only run on a first inning grounder from Troyer that allowed Brooklyn Plitz to score from third base.

The Mastodons only led 3-1 at the end of the fourth inning, but an explosive four-run fifth inning leaped them ahead 7-1, paving the way for the win.

Oakland accumulated just four hits in the game, while PFW tallied 14 hits, tying their season high.

Annabel Power notched multiple hits (2-for-3) for Oakland as the only Golden Grizzly with multiple hits.

Oakland moves onto a home midweek doubleheader against Lawrence Tech on Wednesday, Apr, 16, before traveling to IU Indy for their first games outside of Michigan in over a month.
