Softball Scores Double-Digits in Series Finale as they Sweep Blue Devils

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies got back on track as they notched a doubleheader sweep of Lawrence Tech (LTU) at home behind a pair of breakout offensive team performances.

GAME 1

Oakland found themselves down early, trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning, but the Golden Grizzlies would wake up at the plate as RBI singles from Brooklyn Plitz and Kam Troyer tied the game at 2-2.

They would later take the lead, once again off the bat of Plitz as she notched an inside the park home run to the right field corner, giving Oakland a one run advantage at 3-2. Troyer also struck once more, with a RBI triple in the fifth as well as Oakland's lead jumped to two runs at 4-2.

Gloriana Su'a would knock a solo home run in the top of the seventh for the Blue Devils, but it was not enough as Oakland escaped with a 4-3 win in the opener.

Plitz (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Troyer (2-for-3, 2 RBI) accounted for four of Oakland's six hits and all of their runs in the special performance from the duo.

Maraina Smith earned the win in the circle, her second of the season, as she went the full way, forcing 14 groundouts as she shut down LTU in the middle innings.

GAME 2

The final game of the day saw the Golden Grizzlies fall behind early once again, trailing 3-1 after the first inning, as Troyer continued a special day with another RBI single.

By the middle of the second inning the lead was now 4-1 in favor of the Blue Devils, but from there on out Oakland would turn up the pressure and not let up.

Mia Konyvka and Alexa Kownacki would score RBI singles in the second and third innings, bringing Oakland within a single run at 4-3, but the game would completely change in the fifth inning.

In the fifth, Oakland scored six runs on seven hits behind RBIs from Kayla Turmell, Annabel Power, Alyssa Balcom, Plitz, Troyer, and Kownacki.

After Madi Herrington added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI single, the Golden Grizzlies were able to coast to an 11-4 victory and complete the doubleheader sweep.

Oakland's 17 hits set a season high for the squad, while Plitz (3-for-5), Herrington (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Troyer (2-for-4, 3 RBI), Kownacki (2-for-4, 2 RBI), and Balcom (3-for-3) all tallied multiple hits.

Balcom also earned the win in the circle, tossing five innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit and striking out six batters as she found her rhythm.

The Golden Grizzlies return to league play as they travel to IU Indy for a weekend series, beginning on Friday, Apr. 18.
