Bommarito and Plitz Stay Hot, but Unable to Pull out Series Win over Jags

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Oakland and IU Indianapolis engaged in a tight series down in Indianapolis, where Kenna Bommarito shined in the circle, while Taylor Carraway, Kam Troyer, and Brooklyn Plitz continued to battle hard at the plate. The Jags were able to outlast the Golden Grizzlies, winning the series two games to one.

GAME 1 | FRIDAY, APR. 18 | 1 PM

Oakland opened up the series with a much-needed 8-6 win, carried by a dominant performance at the plate, and a special day from freshman Bommarito.

Bommarito not only earned her sixth win in the circle this season, tossing a complete game and striking out 10 batters for the second time this season, but she also went 3-for-4 from the plate with four RBI and a home run.

She started the scoring with a RBI single in the top of the first inning. Storm Kentros followed suit with a RBI single of her own as the Golden Grizzlies took a 2-0 lead.

The Jags responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first, tying the game at two runs apiece, highlighted by a Paige McPhearson RBI single.

Bommarito would send a three run dinger over the wall in the fifth, giving Oakland a commanding 5-2 lead. Taylor Carraway added a run on a RBI double in the sixth to stretch the lead another run.

IU Indy would pull back closer as Callie Dickerson hit a solo homer in the sixth, but IU Indy would commit two costly errors in the seventh, resulting in two more Oakland runs as they put away the win.

Brooklyn Plitz (3-for-4) extended her hitting streak to 11 games, while Carraway also went 2-for-4 on the day. The Golden Grizzlies also saw the return of Reese Ruhlman, who returned from a month long absence, and although she went hitless, her All-League presence at the plate will definitely net positive.

GAME 2 | FRIDAY, APR. 18 | 3 PM

The Golden Grizzlies couldn't replicate their game one performance in the second outing, going scoreless as they fell 0-6.

The Jags scored the majority of their runs in the second inning, with a run walked home, scoring on a grounder, and a two RBI double from Morgan Gilbert. They added another pair of runs in the fifth on a Molly Kable home run as they sealed the win.

Despite a loss, Oakland tallied three more hits than IU Indy, seven to four. Plitz continued to make an impact at the plate, going 2-for-4. Kam Troyer (2-for-4) and Carraway (2-for-4) also registered multiple hits.

GAME 3 | SUNDAY, APR. 20 | 12 PM

The Golden Grizzlies and the Jags closed the series out with a marathon game, spanning nine innings, as IU Indy outlasted Oakland 1-0.

Neither team scored in regulation innings, although Oakland tallied eight hits total to six from the Jags over the game.

Oakland nearly marked the scoreboard first in the third inning as Alexa Kownacki slammed a double to left field. Brooklyn Plitz, who reached second on a stolen base, raced the basepath and was called out at home trying to stretch one base into two.

The Golden Grizzlies would only get a runner in scoring position twice more, one coming in the top of the ninth as Turmell and Troyer singled to put runners on first and second, but were never able to advance.

Gilbert would earn the game-sealing, walk-off hit for the Jags as she sent an RBI triple off the bat to close out the game.

Bommarito pitched a complete 8.2 innings, striking out seven batters, reaching her total to 17 strikeouts for the series.

Plitz extended her hit streak once again, now reaching 13 games as she went 1-for-5. Turmell was the only Golden Grizzly to reach multiple hits, tallying two (2-for-3).

Oakland moves on from the heartbreaking loss, gearing up for a non-conference matchup with Michigan on Tuesday, Apr. 22.
