Troyer, Ruhlman, Bommarito, and Balcom all Reach Career Milestones in Series Loss to Penguins

YOUNGSTOWN, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies headed to Youngstown for their final road series of the season to take on the Penguins in a big end-of-season series, eventually falling two games to one in a hard fought series.

Oakland saw a ton of milestones get hit over the series as Reese Ruhlman and Kam Troyer each surpassed 100 career hits, while Kenna Bommarito and Alyssa Balcom each reached 100 career strikeouts as well.

Game 1

The opening game of the series was a close-knit affair, coming down to the last out as the Penguins squeaked away with a 5-6 walk-off win to start the weekend.

Oakland held command for most of the game, kicking things off with a 1-0 lead on a Kam Troyer home run in the top of the first.

Elyssa Imler would tie the game up for YSU with an RBI single in the third, the last score before both teams would tee off for big fifth innings.

Oakland would regain the lead in the fifth with three runs coming via a RBI single from Brooklyn Plitz and a two-run double from Troyer, giving the Golden grizzlies a 4-1 lead.

The Penguins would respond swiftly, scoring three of their own runs in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring on a sacrifice fly, ground out, and wild pitch to even the score.

Continuing the back and forth affair, Oakland regained the lead in the top of the sixth off the bat of Storm Kentros who lobbed a RBI single into center field. But YSU once again responded, using a Cassandra Carlson RBI single to once again knot the game.

After holding Oakland without a run in the top of the seventh, The Penguins came through as Imler earned her second hit of the game, this time ending things with a walk-off single.

Troyer (2-for-3, 3 RBI) had a sensational series opener, while Kenna Bommarito (2-for-3) and Reese Ruhlman (2-for-3) also were solid at the plate.

Game 2

The Golden Grizzlies came back to the field for the final game of the opening doubleheader with a vengeance, turning a complete 180 and demolishing the Penguins with a 10-0 win in five innings.

The game started with a 3-0 lead in the first behind a Taylor Carraway ground out that allowed a run to score, followed by an Alyssa Balcom two RBI double.

Balcom would also hold down the fort in the circle, striking out six batters in five innings pitched en route to her first career shutout.

Oakland would explode in the fourth inning, sealing the victory with a seven-run frame. Kayla Turmell, Plitz, and Ruhlman all notched RBI singles in the inning, while more runs scored on what would end up six fielding errors by the Penguins, dooming them to the loss.

Ruhlman (2-for-4, 2 RBI) earned a pair of hits en route to her 100th career hit, while Balcom (2-for-3, 2 RBI) also dominated at the plate.

GAME 3

Oakland would fall in the finale, unable to come back from an early deficit, losing in their final road game of the season 3-9.

After falling behind 0-5 heading into the fifth inning, Oakland made an effort to rally in the top half of the fifth as Alyssa Balcom hit her first homer of the season, a solo shot to right field.

Troyer would add another run on a RBI single, making the score 2-5, as she joined Ruhlman in the 100 career hit club as Oakland made an effort to rally.

The Penguins would put the game away with four more runs in the top of the ninth. Troyer would connect on a RBI triple in the top of the ninth, but it served too little too late for the Golden Grizzlies.

Ruhlman finished the game 3-for-3 and Troyer 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI as Oakland closed the series.

The Golden Grizzlies return home for a doubleheader against Mercyhurst on Tuesday, Apr. 29 at 2 p.m.
