Softball Earns Series Win Over Top Seeded Vikings in Final Games of the Season

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies closed their season on a high note, upsetting the number one seeded Cleveland State (CSU) Vikings in the regular season finale series.

GAME 1 | FRIDAY, MAY 2 at 3 PM

Oakland kicked off the series with a tone-setting 10-2 victory in five innings, dominating the Vikings, playing early spoiler to their regular season title hopes.

After CSU scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning, Oakland rained down the runs in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs in the frame.

The scoring onslaught began with a three-RBI triple from Taylor Carraway, and closed out by three RBI singles by Alyssa Balcom, Alexa Kownacki, and Brooklyn Plitz to take a 6-1 lead.

Cleveland State would add one run, via a Kylie Gorusch home run in the fourth, but Oakland would slam the door the next inning as Kenna Bommarito went yard with a solo shot and Reese Ruhlman ended the game with a two-RBI double.

The Golden grizzlies would out-hit CSU 12 to four. Plitz (3-for-3, RBI), Carraway (2-for-3, 3 RBI), and Kownacki (2-for-3) all tallied multiple hits in the statement win.

Bommarito earned her seventh win of the season in the circle, striking out six batters. She also registered her second game this season with a pitching win and home run hit at the plate.

GAME 2 | SATURDAY, MAY 3 at 12 PM

The Vikings would even the series score in the second game, securing their regular season championship with a 10-5 win.

Emma Gilkerson gave CSU the early lead with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. Oakland would respond as Mia Konyvka hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the same frame as the Golden Grizzlies trailed 2-3 to start.

The Vikings would go off in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs as Gilkerson tallied two more RBIs with a single, while a series of three Oakland errors in the inning resulted in runs scored.

The last three runs of the game would be scored by Oakland, with a RBI single from Storm Kentros in the bottom of the fourth, and a pair of RBI doubles from Kam Troyer and Madi Herrington in the bottom of the fifth.

Troyer (2-for-4) and Herrington (2-for-3) would be the only Golden Grizzlies to score multiple hits.

GAME 3 | SATURDAY, MAY 3 at 12 PM

Oakland would break out more of the hitting magic they had in game one for the finale, cruising to an 8-0 shutout win in six innings, closing their season on a high note.

The scoring began with a two RBI double from Carraway in the third, before a three-run fifth inning increased the lead. Carraway would continue a sensational series with another RBI on a single in the inning. Reese Ruhlman and Brooklyn Wyczalek would both score on CSU errors as Oakland led 5-0 by the end of the inning.

The Golden Grizzlies would close things out in the sixth, as Ruhlman slammed a two-RBI triple to center field, leading to a Troyer fielder's choice that brought Ruhlman home for the win.

Carraway (2-for-3, 3 RBI) shined once again, while Plitz (2-for-4) closed her season out with a 20 game hitting streak, the longest by any Oakland player since 2019.

Unfortunately, Oakland fell just short of securing the sixth and final seed in the Horizon League Championship, as Green Bay also won two of their final three games, blocking Oakland and leaving them just a single game short of the postseason.

Despite the season coming to a close, a series win over a number one seed not only showcased the fight and pride of the team, but what a positive future the program has heading into 2026.
