Softball Falls in Both Games on Day Two of Ohio State Tournament

COLUMBUS, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies went 0-2 in day two of the Ohio State Tournament, falling to the #1 Texas Longhorns, and ultimately the Kent State Golden Flashes.

GAME 1 vs TEXAS

The Golden Grizzlies weren't able to keep pace with the new top ranked team on the nation, falling 13-0 to the Longhorns to start the day.

Texas wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, putting up a seven-run first inning against Oakland starter Alyssa Balcom. The Golden Grizzlies struggled to contain Texas' offense as the home team racked up 14 hits, including three home runs and four doubles.

Oakland had a few bright spots at the plate. In the first inning, leadoff hitter Brooklyn Plitz provided the team's first hit, a triple to deep center field. Kamryn Troyer followed with a double later in the game, but the Golden Grizzlies were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities, leaving three runners on base.

On the mound, Balcom took the loss after facing 10 batters in the first inning. Freshman Kenna Bommarito came in for relief, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out three.

Despite the tough loss, the Oakland defense remained solid, committing no errors in the field. Catcher Taylor Carraway contributed defensively by throwing out a Texas runner attempting to steal second.

GAME 2 vs KENT STATE

The Golden Grizzlies and Golden Flashes had a slugfest to close the day, combining for 24 hits as Kent State outlasted Oakland 8-6.

Kent State got on the board early, pushing a run across in the first inning before extending their lead to 3-0 after two innings. Oakland responded in the bottom of the second when Storm Kentros delivered a clutch RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Golden Flashes added two more in the third inning, but Oakland's defense held strong in the fourth, shutting down the Kent State offense.

In the bottom half of the fourth, the Golden Grizzlies came alive. Mia Konyvka provided the spark, launching a solo home run to ignite the offense. Madi Herrington followed with a two-run single, tying the game at 5-5 and swinging the momentum in favor of Oakland.

Kent State regained the lead in the fifth with two runs, but the resilient Oakland squad struck again in the sixth. Konyvka came through once more, doubling to drive in another run, followed by a key sacrifice fly from Brooklyn Plitz to bring the Grizzlies within one at 7-6.

Despite a valiant effort, Kent State tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, and Oakland was unable to complete the comeback.

Mia Konyvka led the charge offensively, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs, while Madi Herrington contributed with a clutch two-run single in the fourth inning. Storm Kentros added an RBI single to get Oakland on the board early, and Kenna Bommarito provided a solid effort in relief, allowing just one earned run over 2.2 innings pitched.

The Golden Grizzlies play one more game in the OSU Tournament, facing off against the host team Ohio State once more on Sunday, Mar. 9 at 3 p.m.
