Golden Grizzlies Hit Multiple Homers; Split Opening Games of OSU Tournament

COLUMBUS, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies split their first pair of games at the Ohio State Tournament, besting Merrimack College and falling to the host Ohio State..

GAME 1 vs MERRIMACK

The Golden Grizzlies used an explosive first inning to blow past Merrimack in their tournament opener.

Oakland wasted no time asserting themselves, plating five runs in the opening frame. Madi Herrington delivered the biggest swing of the inning, launching a grand slam to left-center field, putting Oakland in command from the outset. Alyssa Balcom also contributed with an RBI single, rounding out a dominant first inning as they led 5-0.

Starting pitcher Alyssa Balcom was stellar for the Golden Grizzlies, tossing a complete game while allowing just two runs on seven hits. The right-hander struck out seven batters and worked out of multiple jams to keep the Warriors from mounting a comeback.

The Warriors pushed across their first run in the third inning on a two-out RBI double and added another in the fifth on a sacrifice fly. However, Balcom and the Oakland defense remained composed, shutting the door in the final two innings.

Herrington finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI, all coming on the grand slam. Troyer also earned multiple hits for Oakland, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

GAME 2 vs OHIO STATE

The Golden Grizzlies weren't able to keep the bats on fire for their second game, falling 2-10  to the Buckeyes to close out the day.

Ohio State struck early, plating three runs in the first inning. Oakland's starting pitcher Kenna Bommarito recorded three strikeouts in the inning but struggled to contain the Buckeyes' bats.

The second inning saw Bommarito settle in, holding Ohio State scoreless. However, the Buckeyes extended their lead in the third with two more runs off a pair of home runs, making it a 5-0 game.

Oakland responded in the fourth inning when Rees Ruhlman launched a solo home run, putting the Golden Grizzlies on the board. However, Ohio State countered with a big bottom half, scoring five more runs to take a commanding 10-1 lead.

In the fifth, Taylor Carraway added another highlight for Oakland, crushing a solo shot over the fence. Her home run gave the Golden Grizzlies their second run of the game, but the team was unable to generate further offense, leading to a run-rule conclusion after five innings.

Despite the loss, Oakland had key performances from Rees Ruhlman, who went 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI, and Taylor Carraway, who also went 1-for-2 with a solo home run. Kenna Bommarito contributed on the mound with three strikeouts over three innings of work.

The Golden Grizzlies will retake the diamond on Saturday, Mar. 8 as they take on Texas and Kent State.
