Women's Basketball's Season Comes to a Close as they Fall at Top Seeded Green Bay in Quarterfinal

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Golden Grizzlies' season came to an end in Green Bay as a dynamic scoring third quarter was not enough to form a comeback as they fell 55-84 to the Phoenix in the Horizon League Quarterfinal on the road.

Dani Grim closed out her career as a Golden Grizzly with a season-high 18 points (8-of-13 FG) along with three rebounds, a block, and a pair of steals. Smith also scored in double-digits, going for 10 points (4-of-9 FG), tying a season-high with six assists. Lianna Baxter was the final Golden Grizzly to score in double-digits, tallying 11 points (4-of-8 FG). seven rebounds, and six assist.

For the Phoenix, Maddy Schreiber led all scorers with 21 points (7-of-10 FG).

Both teams came out sharp and with postseason intensity, as Skorupski and Smith opened the scoring for the Golden Grizzlies. Green Bay's McNeal countered Oakland's start, scoring six of the Phoenix opening points as Green Bay led 9-5 early.

Despite a relatively lukewarm offensive start for the Golden Grizzlies, shooting .333 (4-of-12 FG) from the field, their defense was tireless, playing a full 30 seconds of defense, often forcing the Phoenix into desperation attempts at the end of the shot clock. Green Bay was still able to piece together a few consecutive scoring possessions, including back-to-back layups to end the quarter by Callie Genke and Jenna Guyer as Green Bay led 18-10 after one quarter of play.

Green Bay would open the second quarter continuing a 10-0 run dating back to the end of the first quarter, taking a 10-24 lead before Grim knocked down her first triple of the game to stop the run.

Oakland would find their rhythm offensively with under two minutes to go in the half, creating quality shots through off-ball motion as they strung together five consecutive scoring possessions, finished off by a Skorupski free throw as they trailed 24-37.

Even with an improved shooting percentage in the second quarter, scoring at a .455 (5-of-11 FG) clip, Oakland was unable to keep up with Green Bay's efficient attack as they Phoenix shot .615 (8-of-13 FG) in the second quarter as Oakland trailed 41-24 at halftime.

Smith led Oakland with six points in the opening half, while Grim and Skorupski added five points each as well.

The Golden Grizzlies ended the half with more triples made (4) than the Phoenix (3), but the discrepancies in field goal percentage gave Green Bay the upper hand as they shot .500 (16-of-32 FG) to Oakland's .390 (9-of-23 FG).

Oakland came out of the half on fire offensively, draining six of their first seven shots as Lianna Baxter quickly tallied six points in the quarter with a triple, helping the Golden Grizzlies manufacture some momentum.

Both squads would shoot over .600 in the third quarter, as Oakland marked their best offensive quarter of the night with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, with Grim scoring seven in the quarter. Even with a fiery frame on offense, Green Bay seemed to always match Oakland's scoring efforts as The Golden Grizzlies trailed 43-64 at the end of the third.

The Golden Grizzlies would finish the game fighting, despite the loss they held Green Bay to their worst quarter of the night, going .333 FG% from the floor, including forcing a nearly five-minute long scoring drought by the Phoenix midway through.
