Golden grizzlies Come Up Winless in Series at North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. - The Golden Grizzlies were unable to best the North Alabama Lions in either of their final two matchups, including in an 11-inning thriller to close out the series.

GAME 1

Oakland put up a strong defensive effort in game number one, but ultimately fell 4-0 to North Alabama on Saturday.

Oakland's Alyssa Balcom started well in the bottom half of the opening inning, working around a leadoff single to keep the game scoreless.

After two quiet innings, North Alabama broke through in the third. With two runners on, Hailey Jones delivered a clutch two-out, two-run double to put the Lions on the board. Despite Balcom's efforts, North Alabama's offense continued to apply pressure.

Oakland's best scoring opportunity came in the fifth inning when Brooklyn Plitz and Storm Kentros each collected hits, but the Golden Grizzlies were unable to capitalize as Simon worked out of the jam.

North Alabama tacked on two more runs in the sixth, extending their lead to 4-0. Jones once again came up big with an RBI single, and a double by Bayleigh Rouse helped seal the victory for the Lions.

Offensively, Balcom led Oakland with two hits, while Plitz and Kentros each added one. Despite a solid outing in the circle, Balcom (2-2) took the loss, pitching a complete game and striking out three.

Balcom's presence was felt on both sides of the ball, leading the team with two hits while also holding North Alabama in check for much of the game. Plitz and Kentros each contributed offensively with a hit, while Jenna Johnston and Madi Herrington provided solid defensive efforts to keep the game within reach. Despite the loss, the Golden Grizzlies showed resilience and will look to bounce back in their next matchup as they continue their road series.

GAME 2

The Grizzlies fought valiantly but ultimately fell 7-8 in an 11-inning thriller in their final game against the Lions. In a game that featured clutch hits, standout pitching, and intense moments, Oakland battled to the very end but came up just short.

The Golden Grizzlies struck first in the second inning, putting two runs on the board thanks to disciplined at-bats and aggressive baserunning. North Alabama responded in the third with two runs of their own, tying the game at 2-2. However, Oakland reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning with a three-run surge, fueled by key hits from Kamryn Troyer and Kayla Turmell.

North Alabama continued to fight, scoring two more runs in the fifth to close the gap to 5-4. The Lions then managed to tie the game in the seventh with a crucial run, forcing extra innings as both teams' bullpens held strong through the late frames.

In the 11th inning, the Lions dealt the game-winning blow as Jones knocked through a bases loaded triple, to seal the game.

Kayla Turmell led the charge for Oakland with a home run and three RBIs, proving to be the offensive spark Oakland needed, while Madi Herrington contributed with two hits and a run, showcasing her consistency at the plate.

Alyssa Balcom pitched seven solid innings, keeping North Alabama's offense in check and recording four strikeouts. Additionally, Kamryn Troyer delivered two hits and an RBI, adding to Oakland's offensive firepower.

The Golden Grizzlies will be back in action beginning on Friday, Mar. 7 in the Ohio State Tournament.
