Golden Grizzlies Exit Series Opening Double Header Without a Win Against the Lions

FLORENCE, Ala. - The Golden Grizzlies couldn't come up with a win in their series opening double header against the North Alabama Lions, moving to 4-5 on he season.

GAME 1

The Oakland Golden Grizzlies faced off against North Alabama on Friday afternoon at Hilda B. Anderson Softball Stadium, where they fell 9-1 in five innings. Despite a strong effort, Oakland struggled to find offensive momentum against a dominant North Alabama pitching performance.

The game started as a defensive showdown, with both teams going scoreless in the first inning. Oakland's Kenna Bommarito kept the Lions in check early, while the Golden Grizzlies worked to put pressure on North Alabama's starter, Emily Simon.

The Lions struck first in the second inning with a four-run surge, highlighted by a two-run home run from Laura Leigh Wheeler. A series of well-placed hits allowed North Alabama to build an early lead, putting Oakland in a tough position.

After North Alabama extended their lead to 5-0 in the third inning, Oakland fought back in the fifth. Olivia Munoz came around to score, giving the Golden Grizzlies their first and only run of the game. Brooklyn Plitz had a solid offensive performance, tallying two of Oakland's four hits.

The Lions sealed the game with a four-run fifth inning, powered by a home run from Bayleigh Rouse. With the score at 9-1, the game was called due to the run rule.
Brooklyn Plitz led Oakland's offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Kenna Bommarito and Rees Ruhlman each added a hit, while Olivia Munoz scored the team's lone run.

GAME 2

Oakland took an early lead but couldn't hold on as North Alabama surged in the second inning to hand the Golden Grizzlies a 9-1 defeat on Friday afternoon at Hilda B. Anderson Stadium.

Oakland wasted no time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brooklyn Plitz led off with a walk and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Balcom. The Golden Grizzlies' aggressive baserunning put pressure on the Lions early, but they were unable to extend the lead further.

North Alabama answered in a major way in the bottom of the second inning, putting up an eight-run frame that proved to be the difference in the game. The Lions capitalized on a combination of timely hitting and Oakland miscues, including three doubles and a triple in the inning to break the game wide open.

Mia Konyvka got the start for Oakland and pitched a scoreless first inning, but the second inning proved to be tough as she was charged with six runs. Alyssa Balcom came in for relief and worked 3.0 innings, allowing three runs while striking out two.

The Golden Grizzlies struggled offensively against North Alabama's pitching, managing just three hits on the day. Kamryn Troyer, Madi Herrington, and Brooklyn Plitz each recorded a hit for Oakland. Despite working three walks, Oakland was unable to string together enough offense to mount a comeback.

Key individual performances for Oakland included Brooklyn Plitz, who reached base twice with a hit and a walk while also scoring the team's lone run. Kamryn Troyer delivered a clutch hit in the later innings, and Alyssa Balcom drove in the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly. On the mound, Balcom recorded two strikeouts in her relief appearance.

Oakland will face the Lions in another double header tomorrow, beginning at 1 p.m. to close out the week.
