Golden Grizzlies Split Final Games of GATA Challenge; Finish Weekend 2-2

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Golden Grizzlies split their Sunday matchups vs Fairfield and Campbell, leaving the GATA Challenge with a 2-2 record in a solid start to their season.

GAME 1 vs FAIRFIELD | 9:30 AM

The Golden Grizzlies secured a 5-2 victory over Fairfield on Saturday morning at Eagle Field, powered by a three-run fourth inning and dominant pitching from Alyssa Balcom as she earned her first win in the circle.

The game started as a defensive battle, with both teams held scoreless through the first three innings. Balcom, who pitched a complete game, kept the Fairfield bats quiet early and controlled the pace of the game.

Fairfield broke through first in the top of the third inning with a sacrifice fly by Anna Paravati to bring home Charli Warren for a 1-0 lead. They extended their advantage in the fourth with an RBI single by Quinn McGonigle, making it 2-0.

Oakland responded in a big way in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Brooklyn Wyczalek roped a two-RBI double, tying the game at 2-2. Moments later, Rees Ruhlman singled to drive in another run, giving Oakland a 3-2 lead.

The Golden Grizzlies kept their momentum rolling in the fifth inning as Balcom helped her own cause with an RBI single, followed by another RBI hit from Ruhlman to push the lead to 5-2.
Balcom took control from there, shutting down Fairfield's offense in the final innings. Oakland's defense held strong, securing the weekend sweep over the Stags.

Along with a complete game and five strikeouts in the circle, allowing just four hits, she went 2-3 with an RBI at the plate. Ruhlman (2-3, 2 RBI) and Storm Kentros (2-3) also added multiple hits for Oakland. Brooklyn Wyczalek delivered maybe the biggest hit of the game for Oakland with her two-RBI double as she went 1-2 in the game.

GAME 2 vs CAMPBELL | 12:30 PM

Oakland battled hard in their matchup against Campbell on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field but ultimately fell short in a 9-0 contest.

The Golden Grizzlies showed moments of defensive brilliance and resilience, even as Campbell managed to put runs on the board.

The game started with Campbell scoring two early runs, but Oakland responded with strong defensive plays. Shortstop Madi Herrington turned a crucial double play in the second inning, shutting down a potential rally and keeping the Golden Grizzlies within striking distance.

Despite some tough breaks in the third inning, where Campbell extended their lead with a key home run, Oakland continued to fight. Pitcher Mia Konyvka stepped in and provided some much-needed stability in relief, slowing Campbell's offensive surge.

The Golden Grizzlies had promising moments at the plate, with Kamryn Troyer, Erin Mackin, Alexa Kownacki, and Madi Herrington all recording hits.

The Golden Grizzlies will stay down south as they prepare for a three-game series at Alabama A&M on Feb. 25-26, and a four game series at Northern Alabama from Feb. 28 to Mar. 1.
