Golden Grizzlies Earn Exciting Win in Extras; Split Opening Day Pair of Games

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Golden Grizzlies split their opening day games on the Diamond, ending their opening day of the GATA Challenge with a 1-1 record, recording a win over Fairfield to end the night.

GAME 1 vs GEORGIA SOUTHERN
Oakland fell to Georgia Southern 6-2 on Saturday despite a late-inning push powered by a two-run home run from Kam Troyer.

Georgia Southern took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Emma Davis walked, stole second and scored on a double by Valerie Combs.

Oakland threatened again in the top of the second after Kayla Turmell reached on a walk, but the Golden Grizzlies were unable to score, stranding the go-ahead run on base.
Georgia Southern extended its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third when Davis singled, stole second and came home on an RBI single by Payton Cushman.

The Eagles broke the game open in the fourth. A fielding error allowed Faith Barth to reach base, and Gracie Bellard's RBI single plated an unearned run. Davis followed with an RBI double, and Combs delivered a two-run double to push the lead to 6-0.

Oakland finally broke through in the sixth inning as Reese Ruhlman singled up the middle before Troyer launched a two-run home run to left field, bringing Oakland a pair of runs to bring the score to 2-6.

Erin Mackin drew a walk in the seventh, looking to continue the rally, but Georgia Southern's defense held, sealing the win.

GAME 2 vs FAIRFIELD
Oakland returned to the field for a nightcap game and emerged victorious in an electrifying extra-inning battle against Fairfield, claiming an 8-6 win at Eagle Field.

A combination of early offensive bursts and clutch late-game execution powered the Golden Grizzlies past the Stags in their second win of the season.

Oakland wasted no time asserting their presence, striking first in the opening frame. Brooklyn Plitz set the tone at the top of the order, leading off with a hit and eventually crossing the plate to put Oakland on the board. The offensive momentum continued in the second inning, where the Grizzlies plated two more runs to take a 3-0 advantage.

Alyssa Balcom contributed with a key RBI double in the top of the third, extending the lead to 4-0. Meanwhile, Oakland's defense held firm behind starting pitcher Kenna Bommarito, who kept the Fairfield lineup scoreless through the first four innings.

Oakland continued to score in the top half  of the fourth with two more runs, widening the gap to 6-1. Plitz, who had a stellar night at the plate, continued to ignite the offense, finishing with four hits, three runs scored, and an RBI.

The Stags, however, refused to go down quietly. They mounted a comeback effort in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring five runs combined, including a three-run surge in the seventh to tie the game at 6-6, forcing extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Oakland regained control as they capitalized on a pair of timely hits. Kamryn Troyer delivered a two-out, two-RBI single, driving in the go-ahead runs and putting the Grizzlies back on top 8-6. Bommarito, who pitched all eight innings, shut the door in the bottom half to secure the complete-game victory.

Brooklyn Plitz went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Alyssa Balcom added two doubles and an RBI. Kamryn Troyer contributed by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Kenna Bommarito delivered a complete-game performance, striking out seven over eight innings while allowing 11 hits and six earned runs.

The Golden Grizzlies and the Stags will meet again tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., before Oakland closes their time out at the GATA Challenge with a face-off against Campbell University at 12 p.m.
