Women's Soccer's Unbeaten Streak Ends at Five Games with Loss to Penguins

YOUNGSTOWN, Oh. — The Golden Grizzlies' unbeaten streak was halted at five games as they suffered a loss for the first time since Sept. 18, falling 3-0 on Thursday evening to Youngstown State at Farmers National Bank Field.

Oakland established an early attacking rhythm right out the gate as Anuhea Aluli took a shot in the second minute. The team continued to apply pressure with multiple corner kicks and attempts on goal, including efforts from Corinne Jenkins and Brae Cole, but the Penguins' defense held firm.

Maryn Weiger made key saves to keep Oakland in contention, notably stopping a close-range shot from Eva Sunjevaric. Despite this defensive effort, the Penguins broke the deadlock in the 31st minute when Kamryn Rosa scored, giving YSU a 1-0 lead, which they would hold going into halftime.

Oakland tallied seven shots in the half, putting two on goal. While the Penguins also tallied 10 shots, the game was full of offensive chances, setting the tone for both offenses as the defenses tried to rally in the second half.

The final 45 minutes began with the Penguins extending their lead just under a minute into the half, with Sunjevaric finding the back of the net. Oakland responded with a series of offensive pushes, including shots from Cole and Mallory Anderson, but they were unable to convert these chances into goals.

Weiger remained active in goal for Oakland, recording multiple saves against the Penguins' efforts to increase their lead. Despite maintaining pressure through several corner kicks and shots, Oakland was unable to find the net. The Penguins ultimately widened their advantage when Chloe Weiland scored with assistance from Felder in the late stages of the half, sealing a 0-3 defeat for Oakland.

Anderson led the team's offensive efforts by taking four shots, while Aluli matched Anderson's shooting output with four shots as well, contributing to the team's attack. Cole also tallied a trio of shot attempts.

In their next game, Oakland will travel to Moon Township, PA, to face Robert Morris University on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m.
