Strong First Half Not Enough as Golden Grizzlies Fall to Jags

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies closed out their three-game homestand with a tight 79-73 loss to the IU Indy Jaguars from inside the OU Credit Union O'Rena.

Maddy Skorupski led the Golden Grizzlies in all three major statistical categories, scoring 25 points and dishing out four assists while coming away with six rebounds. Maci Smith finished right behind Skorupski in the scoring column, putting up 23 points.

On the other side of the court, Kate Davidson led the Jaguars in scoring with 23 points while pulling in a team-high seven rebounds. Nevaeh Foster also came up big for IU Indy, scoring 17 points while dealing out two assists.

The Golden Grizzlies got the game started quickly down low in the paint. With time trickling away on the shot clock, Madison Royal-Davis set up Lianna Baxter with a bounce pass inches away from the net, leading to an easy shot off the glass for Baxter, marking Oakland's first points of the game.

The Jaguars kept it competitive for the rest of the first quarter, but it was all Oakland the entire way. The Golden Grizzlies led the whole quarter, and a Royal-Davis and-one put Oakland ahead 21-9 to end the first quarter.

As the second quarter got underway, Dani Grim got the party started with a deep three. The three, which Skorupski assisted, marked Oakland's first of the night as the Golden Grizzlies continued to wear IU Indy down in the interior.

Throughout the rest of the second, IU Indy slowly cut into Oakland's lead, with most of its buckets coming from inside the paint. Still, the Golden Grizzlies stayed ahead of the Jaguars with a buzzer-beater layup from Maci Smith as the team led 42-35 going into halftime.

Entering the break, the Jaguars had the advantage off the boards, outrebounding the Golden Grizzlies 19-13. From the field, Oakland shot at an efficient .556 clip (15-for-27) compared to IU Indy's .429 (15-for-35) mark. From deep, both teams shot at a .333 rate, with the Jaguars taking more attempts from three (3-for-9) than the Golden Grizzlies (2-for-6).

At the start of the third, the Jaguars walled up on defense and turned their defense into offense, as IU Indy got some easy looks in transition. By the media timeout, Oakland still had the lead over the Jaguars, 47-46.

As the third continued, IU Indy eventually took the lead with a layup from Azyah Newson-Cole that capped a 10-0 run for the Jaguars. By the end of the quarter, IU Indy's momentum ballooned its lead to 59-52.

To begin the fourth, Skorupski continued to find nylon. Still, IU Indy stayed right with Oakland as the teams traded baskets. Remarkably, the Jaguars couldn't further expand their lead, and the Golden Grizzlies couldn't make any significant dents in the Jaguar lead.

With the game hanging in the balance, the Golden Grizzlies just couldn't keep up with the aggressive offense from the Jaguars, as Oakland fell in defeat in their second conference loss of the season.

At the end of the game, the Jaguars won the battle of the boards, leading Oakland 37-29 in that category. IU Indy eventually pulled ahead of Oakland from the field, shooting a .483 clip (29-for-60) while the Golden Grizzlies shot at a .463 mark (25-for-54). From deep, the Jaguars broke the stalemate, knocking down .353 of their threes (6-for-17), while the Golden Grizzlies converted .313 of their threes (5-for-16).

Next, the Golden Grizzlies will play the Detroit Mercy Titans on the road on Saturday, Jan. 11, marking the start of a three-game road trip for Oakland. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. ET, and the game will be live-streamed on ESPN+.
