Women's Basketball Suffers First Conference Loss to Mastodons

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies weren't able to continue their hot streak from their previous game as they suffered their first defeat in conference play, falling 37-77 to a sharpshooting Purdue Fort Wayne team.

Baxter led all scorers and nearly notched a double-double for Oakland, scoring nine points (4-of-9 FG) and grabbing a team-best seven rebounds.

The Mastodons were led by guard Sydney Freeman who poured in a game-high 21 points (7-of-10 FG) and five threes (5-of-7 3FG). Lauren Ross earned a double-double for PFW as well, scoring 10 points (4-of-4 FT) and 11 rebounds.

Oakland struggled offensively out the gate, missing each of their first six shots as the Mastodons used a trio of makes from deep to take a 9-1 lead.

Lianna Baxter and Sereniti Roberts-Adams would provide relief from the post, scoring a pair of buckets in the paint as Oakland trailed 5-14 with just over three minutes left in the period.

In the final minute of the quarter Baxter would hit another shot from the post, while Maddy Skorupski scored her first points with a turnaround shot to beat the buzzer, but PFW's four triples (4-of-10 3FG) in the quarter were enough to give them a 20-9 lead after the first 10 minutes.

The Mastodons continued their momentum in the second quarter, breaking loose on a 7-0 run after a Bromenschenkel three gave them a 27-10 lead with 6:10 remaining in the half.

Oakland's struggles to score continued, but Baxter continued to make impact plays, getting to the paint for free throws and registering a block in the quarter's start.

Kylie Bukcley would stop what grew to a 15-0 PFW run, knocking down a long two from the top of the key as Oakland trailed 12-35 with time closing down in the opening half.

Despite a frigid quarter from the field, Oakland would score six points in the final minute and a half, trailing 16-40 going into the break.

Over the first two quarters, the Golden Grizzlies shot just .300 (.7-of-23 FG) from the field and were held without a made attempt from three, while the Mastodons shot .470 (16-of-34 FG), with over half of their shots coming from beyond the arc as they took 19 threes, making eight of them (.420 3FG%).

Baxter led Oakland in scoring over the first half, tallying seven points (3-of-4 FG) to go along with four rebounds. Sydney Freeman led all scorers with 13 points (5-of-7 FG), 10 of them coming in the second quarter for PFW.

The Golden Grizzlies started the second half on a better foot, running a clean half court set to find Madison Royal-Davis for an open layup on the first possession. Skorupski would score on the very next possession with a layup of her own, getting Oakland into a much better rhythm as they attacked the basket more regularly than in the first half.

Later in the quarter, Dani Grim would continue Oakland's best offensive period, knocking down the team's first triple of the game.

Despite scoring 11 points in the quarter, their most on the night thus far, the Golden Grizzlies still had no solutions for the offense of PFW, trailing 27-58 at the end of the third.

The game would keep its current pace, as PFW held on for the win.

Cold shooting and the turnover bug doomed Oakland in the game, as they shot just .290 (15-of-52 FG) and turned the ball over 18 times, resulting in 22 PFW points off those turnovers.

The Mastodons played true to their style, shooting a high volume of threes, hitting them at a clip of .360 (13-of-36 3FG)

The Golden Grizzlies move to 4-1 in conference play as they look ahead to their third straight home game on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m as they take on IU Indianapolis before braving a three-game road trip.
