ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland Swim and Dive gear up for a pair of meets this weekend against Calvin College and a second meeting against Wayne State this season.
This Friday, the Golden Grizzlies prepare for a showdown at home against the Calvin Knights. The Golden Grizzlies boast an all time record of two wins and one tie against the Calvin Knights. These three competitions came in the first two seasons of Oakland Swim and Dive history. In the Golden Grizzlies inaugural season, 1964-1965, the Men's Swim and Dive team defeated the Knights 55-35 in their first ever matchup. During that inaugural season, the Men's Swim and Dive team became the first varsity team in Oakland University Athletics history.
The Oakland Golden Grizzlies look to honor those before them with a competitive meet this Friday. After lots of training, the Golden Grizzlies are eager to get back on the pool deck and face off against the Knights. After an impressive showing at the Zippy Invite, where both the men's and women's team secured second place, the Golden Grizzlies want more. The Oakland Swim teams look to
Jonas Cantrell,
Christopher Palvadre, and
Harry Nicholson to lead the men. On the women's side,
Jordyn Shipps,
Rhianna Hensler, and
Grace Albrecht had amazing performances at the Zippy Invite, which will be pivotal to the Golden Grizzlies' success this weekend.
Following their matchup against the Calvin Knights, the Golden Grizzlies will head down the road to take on the Wayne State Warriors. Earlier this season, the two faced off in a sprint meet, where the Golden Grizzlies came away with the win. In their matchup this Saturday at the Matthaei Natatorium, the Golden Grizzlies will also have the support of the dive teams. Four time Horizon League Women's Diver of the Week,
Ellie Chalifoux, and
Victoria Sanders look to be the one, two punch for the Golden Grizzlies. On the men's side, Edin DeHooghe and
Liam James are set to put up impressive numbers on the weekend.
In the final stretch of the season, the Golden Grizzlies look for a strong outing this weekend before their final home stand of the season. With Horizon League Championships closing in, the Golden Grizzlies are finding their stride heading into final stretch.
Catch the Golden Grizzlies in action at the Oakland Aquatic Center Friday, January 17 at 5 p.m. versus the Calvin Knights.
