Golden Grizzlies Look to Spark Win Streak with Pair of Upcoming League Games

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies men's basketball team looks to spark a league win streak as it takes on IU Indy Wednesday (Jan. 15) at home, followed by a short trip to Detroit Mercy Saturday (Jan. 18).

Tip-off for Wednesday's game inside the OU Credit Union O'rena is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET and is 'Future Golden Grizzlies Night'. The team then takes a short trip to Detroit to face off against the Titans inside Calihan Hall at 1:00 p.m. ET. Both games will be streamed live of ESPN+.

The Golden Grizzlies (6-12, 3-4 HL) got back in the win column and finished its road trip 1-1 after it fell to Wright State, 66-62, Thursday (Jan. 9) but followed it up with a 68-53 win against Northern Kentucky Saturday (Jan. 11).

In Thursday's loss, the Golden Grizzlies started strong, leading 28-23 at halftime behind solid defense and contributions from multiple players, including Buru Naivalurua and Isaiah Jones, who each scored seven points. Oakland controlled the boards in the first half, outrebounding Wright State 20-11. Despite maintaining a slim lead early in the second half, the Raiders rallied, taking their first lead with just over 10 minutes to play. The teams exchanged baskets in a tightly contested final stretch, with the score tied at 61 with one minute remaining, however, Wright State capitalized on a late turnover and free throws to secure the victory.

In it's win over the Norse, Oakland built a 41-32 halftime lead, shooting at a .467 mark from the floor and hitting seven threes. A 13-0 second-half run sealed the game, as the defense held firm and the team controlled the glass with 42 rebounds. The Golden Grizzlies held the Norse to just seven points in the final 9:27, fueled by DQ Cole's 16 points and Naivalurua's 15 points and nine rebounds.

Four Golden Grizzlies average double-digit points per game as Allen Mukeba leads with 13.1 with Naivalurua right behind with 12.5. Naivalurua leads the team off the glass with 7.8 rebounds per game as Oakland as a team narrowly gets outrebounded with 34.9 compared to its opponents 35.2. The Golden Grizzlies shoot at a .408 clip from the floor, for 65.1 points per game, as it allows 70.3 points per game off .443 shooting.

The Jaguars (6-12, 2-5 HL) and Golden Grizzlies matchup for the first time this season as IU Indy grabbed its first win in eight games after it beat Detroit Mercy. Eastern Michigan is the only common non-conference opponent the two teams have met this season as the Jaguars fell by three points to the Eagles. Of the Jaguars six wins, just three have come from Division I opponents, with its only non-conference win coming against Alabama A&M on the road.  

Oakland is 29-18 all-time against IU Indy and has only lost four games at home with 18 wins. In its last 13 games played on the Blacktop, Oakland has come away on top 12 times with its loss coming in overtime during the 2019-20 season. The teams last faced-off inside the OU Credit Union O'rena last season where Oakland won by 48 points, 107-59. Cole, Naivalurua and I. Jones saw action in the win, scoring nine, eight and six points, respectively.

Paul Zilinskas leads the Jaguars with 17.8 points per game as he hits at a .452 clip from the floor. Zilinskas leads the team in made threes with 50, as Jarvis Walker is behind with 36 who is second on the team in scoring with 16.1 points per game. Off the glass, Sean Craig leads the team with 8.1 rebounds per game.

The Jaguars tally 75.9 points per game, shooting .428 from the floor with 10.7 threes, while allowing 72.1 points per game off a .445 clip and 8.1 from range. Off the glass, the Jaguars hold the edge with 3.1 more rebounds per game with its 35.9.

The Titans (6-13, 2-6 HL) enter Saturday's game with a full week of rest as it's coming off a 23-point road loss against Purdue Fort Wayne to go along with its three-game losing streak. The two teams have played a trio of common non-conference opponents this season, as the Titans beat Eastern Michigan, 98-89, but lost to Toledo, 82-67, and Loyola Chicago, 87-65. Four of the team's six wins have come on its home court this season with its only two conference wins coming inside Calihan Hall.

In the Metro Series, Oakland holds a 20-10 record and ride a two-game win streak against Detroit Mercy heading into Saturday. With an 8-2 record in its last 10 games, Oakland hasn't lost inside Calihan Hall since the 2014-15 season, making it nine-straight road wins. Oakland took care of business, 65-50, against Detroit Mercy on the road as Naivalurua tallied 11 points, followed by I. Jones with six and Cole with a pair.

The Titans have a pair of players averaging double-digit points as Orlando Lovejoy leads with 16.1 per game, shooting at a .439 clip from the floor. Mak Manciel is right behind with 13.4 per game as Lovejoy leads the team with 4.9 rebounds per game.

Detroit Mercy, who shoots at a .407 mark from the floor, hit from range 5.8 times per game and average 68.0 points per game. The Titans allow 76.3 points per game and 9.3 triples a game, shooting .433 from the floor. The team leads off the glass though, with 38.3 rebounds per game compared to its opponents 36.7.
