Women's Soccer Anchors down for Two Game Home Stand to Start Conference Play

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies officially start league play as they take on Robert Morris and Youngstown State in a pair of home games this week.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 19 vs ROBERT MORRIS at 5 PM

The Golden Grizzlies and the Colonials prepare to face off for the fifth time ever. Oakland holds a near perfect record against RMU, going 3-0-1 all-time in head-to-head matchups.

The Golden Grizzlies and the Colonials played to a draw in 2023 behind a game-tying goal by Frankie Mudd in the 73rd minute. The two teams have only ever faced off outside of Rochester once, and Oakland looks to continue their historical success at home against RMU.

After a loud 5-0 win against Le Mayne in their season opener, the Colonials have struggled this season. With a 1-3-3 record, they have gone winless in their last six matches, including a 1-1 draw against Dartmouth their last time out.

Despite a rocky start, the Colonials rank third in points in the Horizon League (26), with eight goals and 10 assists on the season. With a balanced attack, they also have allowed the fewest goals (10) of any Horizon League team, while averaging the second lowest opponent goals per game (1.43).

The Robert Morris offense against a stout Oakland defense who has only allowed opponents to score more than one goal twice will be a key factor in the midweek matchup.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 22 vs YOUNGSTOWN STATE at 1 PM

The Penguins will be coming into Rochester as part of their Michigan road trip, playing Oakland after a matchup against Detroit Mercy on Thursday.

Coming into the week YSU is 2-4-2 in the early going, currently on a three game losing streak. They most recently suffered a 1-2 home loss to Duquesne.

While the Penguins have more goals on the season than Oakland (7-to-2), the Golden Grizzlies offense is more aggressive, holding the upper hand in shots (65-to-58), led by Frankie Mudd who has taken the most total shots (26) and shots per game (2.89) of any player in the conference.

Where YSU excels is in goal, where they've allowed a league-low 10 goals and holding a league-best .813 save percentage. Goalkeeper Maya Naimoli is one of the top keepers in the league, ranking first in saves (44). Her against Oakland goalkeeper Julia Zangerl, who is third in the league with two shutouts, will be an entertaining face-off.
