Men's Soccer Aims to Extend Win Streak With Two Big Matches This Week

ROCHESTER, Mich. - After a rocky start to the season, the Golden Grizzlies seem to have found their groove, and after starting the 2024 campaign 0-4, Oakland is now winners of two straight. The squad looks to extend their winning streak to three and maybe four as they take on Loyola Chicago and Northern Kentucky this week.

Most recently the Golden Grizzlies started conference play with a statement 2-1 win over Cleveland State behind a career-first goal from Carson Ballagh and a conference-leading second game-winning goal for Jack Klomparens.

The Golden Grizzly offense has begun to keep pace with an already stout defense, making for what is set to be an elite team if the trend keeps up.

Oakland players are scattered all through conference top ten statistical categories as they pick up steam. Andrew Darakdjian ranks third in assists (3), with Jace Foster ranking seventh (2). Klomparens and Lejs Plicanic both rank in the top ten of goal scorers, while goalkeeper Alex Flowers ranks in the top ten of nearly all goalkeeping stats.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 17 vs LOYOLA CHICAGO at 5 PM

The Golden Grizzlies are set for their first of two final non-conference games as they take on the Ramblers. The teams have only met five times, with Oakland holding a 2-3 series record. The teams have gone back and forth, alternating wins in each matchup. The two teams did meet in 2023, as Loyola earned a 1-0 home victory.

While Oakland has not beaten the Ramblers since 2018, the Golden Grizzlies won the lone game played in Rochester in the series with a 1-0 win back in 2010.

The Ramblers have had a rough start to the 2024 season as they hold a 1-3-1 record thus far, most recently suffering a 0-2 loss to UIC on Sept. 12. Their only win on the season came against Wright State in a 4-2 win on Sept. 5. The Ramblers are looking to wake up their offense that has been sluggish out the gate, having been shutout in all three of their losses.

The Golden Grizzlies will look to overpower Loyola's offense as they have outscored the Ramblers 8-to-5 on the season, while having nearly 20 more shots (65-to-46) and over ten more shots on goal (25-to-14).

SATURDAY, SEPT. 21 @ NORTHERN KENTUCKY at 1 PM

Oakland returns to conference play with a weekend matinee matchup against the Norse. The Golden Grizzlies have been dominant in head-to-heads against NKU, holding a 5-3-1 record all-time and winning two of the last three matchups.

Despite that record, the Norse got the best of the Golden Grizzlies in their last matchup in September of 2023, winning 3-0.
The game will serve as a good measuring tape for the Golden Grizzlies, who have enjoyed recent home success and will return to the road for the first time in four games.

The Norse enter the week 1-2-3 on the season, most recently playing to a 0-0 draw with Robert Morris on Sept. 14. The NKU offense has also scuttled to start the year, ranking last in the Horizon League in goals (6). On the other side, their defense has stifled opponents as they rank tied for first in goals allowed (5) and goals allowed per game (.83). Their goalkeeper Nic Lemen ranks fourth in saves (18) and goal allowed (5) as he anchors their back line.

The Golden Grizzlies are lined up for another week of play as the season enters full swing.
