Women's Soccer Falls in Final Non-Conference Match of Season

ATHENS, Oh - In a tough matchup against a formidable Ohio Bobcats team, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies fell in their final non-conference game of the season.

The first half saw Oakland come out strong, with midfielder Thai Quallich and forward Kimee Liu both generating early offensive pressure. Quallich's shot at the 16-minute mark soared just high, while Liu's attempt at 25 minutes missed narrowly wide right. Melaina Troy provided one of Oakland's best chances in the 15th minute, as they constructed a great run into the Ohio box, where Melaina Troy received a pass from Frankie Mudd and put a shot on goal where Ohio's Celeste Sloma made the save. Despite these chances, Ohio's quick succession of goals in the 20th and 21st minutes shifted momentum in the Bobcats' favor as Aubrey Rea and Hailey Jeng put the Bobcats up 2-0 in the early going.

Ohio would add one more goal before the half, a left-footed roller to the bottom right corner, in the 37th minute to put the Bobcats in front 3-0 heading into the break.

Oakland's goalkeeper, Julia Zangerl, was tested early and often, recording four key saves in the first half to help her team stay competitive.

In the second half, the Golden Grizzlies continued to push for a breakthrough. Isabella Bierod nearly pulled one back for Oakland just before the hour mark with a well-placed shot on target, forcing a sharp save from Sloma. Frankie Mudd also created opportunities, firing two shots that missed narrowly wide. Oakland's persistence and ability to create danger in front of goal reflected their competitive spirit, even as Ohio extended their lead. Tally Diamond added another shot on goal late in the match, but Oakland couldn't quite find the back of the net.

Defensively, Oakland's back line and goalkeepers fought valiantly as Zangerl and Lauren Perry combined for five saves.
Ohio's offensive pressure was immense, finishing the game with 31 total shots, 13 of which were on target, while Oakland finished with seven shots, three on goal.

Throughout the game, Oakland worked hard to maintain possession and create offensive chances, but Ohio's high press and ability to finish their opportunities proved difficult to contain.

In the face of adversity, Oakland showed moments of promise and resilience, as their offensive pressure did increase as the game progressed. Moving forward, their ability to create chances and push opposing defenses will be key to converting close opportunities into goals.

The Golden Grizzlies will return home to begin league play on Thursday, as they host Robert Morris at 5 p.m.
