Women's Soccer Falls Short of Amazing Comeback as they Fall in League Play Opener

ROCHESTER, Mich. - After a hard fought game, the Golden Grizzlies fell to the Robert Morris Colonials 2-1 at the Oakland Soccer Field.

Through the first ten minutes there wasn't much action on either side, until Robert Morris got possession near the goal and Haleigh Finale found a loose ball in the box, sweeping in to score the first goal of the game to put RMU up 1-0 in the early stages.

Oakland looked to respond at the 19 minute mark when Marina Downing shot a header that missed the goal just wide right.

At the end of the first 45 minutes the Colonials led 1-0. Robert Morris seemed to have possession of the ball much longer than Oakland did, however the first half stats were very similar for both teams even with that possession differential. The teams were even in terms of shots on goal (2-to-2), and corners (1-to-1), while Robert Morris led in shots (5-to-4).

Oakland came out of the first half inspired and with a new sense of energy as they tied the game immediately as Frankie Mudd notched the game tying goal in the 46th minute to even the score at 1-1.

After back and forth play for the next twenty minutes, the Colonials took the lead once again, capitalizing on a corner pass as Carson Bogan found the back of the net to give Robert Morris the lead back at 2-1.

At the seventy two minute mark Oakland had another chance to equalize as Isabella Bierod took a shot on goal that just missed wide right.

Robert Morris had an opportunity for an insurance goal with a free kick attempt at minute seventy eight, however the Oakland defense made sure that the Colonials couldn't capitalize on that opportunity, spurning their chance away.

Oakland had one last opportunity at the 87 minute mark, as Shannon Brown serviced a ball into the box where Melaina Troy swooped in to score, but after further review the goal was ruled a handball and overturned, closing Oakland's chances of escaping with at least a draw, as they fell 2-1.

The final stats remained pretty even as Robert Morris slightly led in shots (13-to-11), corners (4-to-3), and saves (4-to-2).

The Golden Grizzlies did lead in shots on goal (5-4), as a strong offensive second half spurred some late hope, but a strong game defensively from Robert Morris held Oakland off from a win.

The Golden Grizzlies will remain at home on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. when Oakland hosts Youngstown State for some more Horizon League action!
