Men's Soccer Falls in High-Octane Match to Wolverines

Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies and the Michigan Wolverines delivered on a highly-anticipated early season matchup  in Ann Arbor on Sunday.

The game began with a slow, methodical feel to it as the favor slanted in favor of Michigan. The Wolverines controlled much of the possession for the opening 10 minutes, keeping the ball on Oakland's half. Despite Michigan's pressure, the Golden Grizzlies' back line of defense stood tall and repeatedly cleared the ball, holding the Wolverines' runs to no real danger.

At around the 15-minute mark Oakland turned the tables, playing a bit of long-ball, sending long passes to open players downfield to slip past the Michigan defense. Andrew Darakdjian registered the first shot for Oakland in the 14th minute, firing a ball into the bottom left where Michigan goalkeeper Hayden Evans made the save.

The Wolverines broke the scoreless spell in the 27th minute as Beto Soto sent a high-flying corner kick into the box, where Jason Buckner leaped into a header that found the back of the net, giving Michigan a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Grizzlies wouldn't stay behind for long as Jack Klomparens scored the equalizer in the 40th minute, finding a deflected ball in the box and finding the back of the net after a Darakdjian header was initially stopped by Michigan's Evans, tying the game at one apiece heading into halftime.

After weathering a rough start, Oakland led the game in shots (3-to-2) after the first 45 minutes of action, carrying momentum into the second half.

The second half started very similarly to the first half, with Michigan coming out the gates hot with runs into the Oakland half and physicality. Also like the first half the Golden Grizzlies as key defenders Malik Sylvester and Zach Townsend deterred anything threatening the middle of the Oakland defense, while the speedy Jace Foster anchored the outside.

In the 55th minute the Wolverines capitalized on an Oakland defense playing up in the field as Bucknor fed a deep ball to Grayson Elmquist who used a running head start to get a one on one at the Oakland goal, rolling a ball into the back of the net as Michigan retook a 2-1 lead.

The Golden Grizzlies nearly answered back in the 64th and 76th minutes as Daradjian took his third and fourth shots of the game, a  couple of right-footed screamers that just whistled past the outside posts on both attempts, leaving Oakland still behind but on the prowl as they looked to score another equalizer.

As the time winded down, the Wolverines packed their defense in, limiting opportunities for the Oakland offense as the Golden Grizzlies ultimately fell 2-1 in their second game of the season.

The sides definitely have a new tradition in the makings of a rivalry-esque series, now splitting the last two meetings and playing both games with a very chippy nature, tallying a combined 24 fouls and three cards given in Sunday's game.

The Golden Grizzlies led in aggressiveness in the match, with eight shots to Michigan's seven, but the Wolverines gained the upper hand in efficiency, putting four of their shots on goal to Oakland's one.

Oakland is back in action on Friday, Aug. 30 as they head to Indiana to take on Butler University.
